Let freedom ring, Let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
    It's Independence Day

From someone whose ancestors (on my father’s side) were United Empire Loyalists, I’d like to say … no hard feelings. ;) I think we all got past that incident rather well.

Have a happy, and safe, Independence Day!

anyone catch the show in downtown Austin? it was pretty nice... i was just happy to find a perfect parking space overlooking the lake... so i could put the top down in my car and just sit there looking at the display... the truck next to me seemed to have a "Patriotic Hits" CD, b/c all we heard the whole night were songs like "America the Beautiful," "Coming to America," and "My Country 'Tis of Thee"... the music really helped make the night! :D

a group from my wife's office reserved a table at Sam Houston Race Park (horse racing) and we spent the evening out there, betting on horses, munching on the HUGE buffet and watching fireworks afterwords... The fireworks were OK, I really think I'm over the whole 4th of July firework thing... I'm just no longer impressed with things that light up and go boom. I could've stayed at home and been just fine. As far as betting goes, we won a few and lost a few, losing only a few bucks (less than $20.)

The parking lot afterwards was PACKED! Thousands of people trying to get out of this place... It was crazy and to top it off, there was a HUGE wreck right outside the racepark so traffic was shut down on one of the exit roads and they diverted traffic in only one direction! It was a huge mess and the best part was I was able to tell my wife, "I told you so"....I told her unless we left early we were going to sit in some MAJOR traffic! I was right! :p

We went to the little town down the road instead of toward the big city. We could spread a blanket on a commercial lawn for an unobstructed view of the Fireworks Show with our little ones 9 MO and 2 1/2 YO.

We had a great time; the little ones were kind of scared by the bigger booms but they enjoyed the light show.

We only sat in traffic for about 10 minutes trying to get on our way home; that was terrific!

I still enjoy the fireworks but am definitely at the point that it is not worth the hassle if the hassle factor gets too high.
