Even before Avengers I would have said Whedon.

The correct choice is Sam Raimi.

I don't like either of their tv stuff, both are better at movies

Whedon seems way more well rounded. Some horror stuff, wrote some comics.

I hate shows that JJ Abrams has involvement in... starts great with promise of big intrigue, then fizzles from the lack of a proper and satisfying conclusion:
    Alias
    Lost
    Fringe

His movies are entertaining. I'm annoyed that he turned Star Trek franchise into something that is the opposite of the originals. Entertaining and high grossing movies, but I want my Star Trek fix... :(

Whedon can sometimes churn out turds (who doesn't?), but it seems like he's a geek at heart and tries to deliver it. Avengers was a movie that was loads of fanservice but was still entertaining to everyone else.

Abrams seems more focused on his "vision". So you notice annoyances if you don't follow or agree with it.

That said, both are really good directors.

JJ Abrams has interesting ideas, executed by mediocre talent.

I'll give my vote after I see what Abrams does with the Star Wars franchise.

Cabin in the Woods (Whedon) and Cloverfield (Abrams) are two of my all time favorites, so it's pretty tough. I'll tentatively say Abrams, especially if he successfully brings back Star Wars.

Abrams was only involved in the pilot for Lost.

Whedon's work usually has some wit to it. Abrams is ADD mixed with noise and lens flairs.

Whedon is the hip answer and Abrams is the better known choice.

Whedon even though Abrams is a better visual director. Whedon's characters at least you care about but with Abrams you don't really much give a damn about them. Whedon will get a pass from me because of Firefly. Firefly and Cowboy Bebop, two of the best scifi to ever grace my tv screen. Abrams is a poor man version of Spielberg who he is trying to copy.

Voted Whedon, love or like almost all his projects. Though his work on one of my all time favorite comic book series the Runaways really really pissed me off (took forever but was still actually below average work). His work on the X-Men comics helped balance it out.

Firefly will always have a special place in my heart. Remember those fangirls that watch the Titanic for the 300th time because every time you watch it, the see the characters alive just a little bit longer? That's what re-watching Firefly does for me, I get it now.

Buffy was a brilliant show, but I've been underwhelmed by everything Whedon has done since. Still better than Abrams.

I tried to watch Firefly once and couldn't make it past about 4 minutes of that ****. And Buffy was like what, Dawson's Creek with 80's synth music?
