Hamilton: DFW not a 'true baseball town'

SURPRISE, Ariz. Former Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton said the Dallas-Fort Worth area is not a true baseball town, in an interview with Gina Miller of CBS 11 (local DFW affiliate) on Sunday.

"There are true baseball fans in Texas, but it's not a true baseball town," said Hamilton, who was booed during the AL wild-card loss to Baltimore at the end of last season.

Hamilton, who signed a five-year $125 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this offseason, said that Dallas has "always been a football town."

"They're supportive," Hamilton said about the fans, "but they also got a little spoiled at the same time pretty quickly."

Hamilton added: "You think about three to four years ago (before two straight World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011). It's like, come on man, are you happier there again?"

Rangers manager Ron Washington stayed away from reacting to Hamilton's comments.

"I'm not answering anything that Josh said," Washington said. "That's Josh. Josh is an Angel. That's Josh's opinion. My opinion is there were 3.5 million fans that came through the turnstiles. That answers it right there."

    ...

He was asked in the interview what the reaction for Rangers' fans might be when he comes to the plate for the first time in Arlington wearing an Angels uniform on Friday, April 5.

"It will be mixed feelings from the crowd," Hamilton said. "People who really get it will cheer and the people who don't will boo. Either way, I'll do what I got to do to help my team win."

What he said is absolutely true.

But there's no reason to say it.

Unless you're Jarred Cosart and you're trolling Dallas like MadMax.

I would boo him because the guy is a total douche imo. So, I guess I don't get it then.

Chicago and Philly are football towns. LA is all about basketball. I'd say Boston, NY, St. Louis and Cinci.

Normally I wouldn't like him saying this but anything that disses Rangers fans I am supportive of.

Chicago is a baseball town. They do support 2 franchises despite a century of futility from both.

Chicago's pretty unique compared to Boston and NY. Sox and Yankees fan bases will always be #1 in those cities. With Chicago, I feel it flip flops quite a bit, but you can say the Bears are equally as big as the Cubs because of their history. Blackhawks fan base has grown a lot over the last 5-6 years, most of any team in North America, but I don't expect it to touch baseball or football. Bulls of course have their share too being the 3rd largest fan base after LAL and NYK. I would call it a hybrid, between Baseball and Football though. One doesn't stand over the other, at least from what I've experienced so far.

Yeah, I guess it's not the cut and dried case that I seemed to present. You could definitely say it's a baseball town when the Cubs are good. But it seems to me like the passion for the Bears is pretty consistently strong, regardless of the team's record. Philadelphia's sort of similar in that the city goes nuts for baseball when the team is good, but in our case it's still definitively a football town first and foremost.
