Was anyone else watching this? It was possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen on ESPN. I think he was going through some sort of roid rage. Please tell me someone else saw this gem.
think the funniest thing had to be the San Fran player with his base running ****-up last week. bwt he got just the other day.
I'm going to get killed for this. Fortunately, it's an anonymous BBS. But I felt his essential point about there being a double standard in who's more likely to get crucified had some validity. I think there are differences in how players are portrayed by the media, and I don't think you can rule out race as a factor. Do I think Sammy Sosa is being victimized because he's black? Latin? No. But might deviating from some hegemonic standard (of which race along with class along with other things are all components) affect how you get treated? Definitely. But if you screw up, you have to pay the consequences. I don't have too much sympathy for a guy making millions to play a game. '...and that s'all I've got tuh say about that.'
Relativist -- Sammy is THE most beloved player in the game. No matter the fan's color...or his...he is the most beloved. The media was all over McGwire about andro...which wasn't even a banned substance at the time...i was all over him as well. I don't think it would be any different...this is a hero taking a fall...everytime that happens..no matter the color...the media is relentless. That's the bottom line. On a side note...Jose Canseco "aligning" with victimized minorities?? Was he kidding?? The guy was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He got himself into so much trouble during his career it's unbelievable. The guy is the king of sour grapes.
I did. Jose Canseco is messed up. He said MLB has covered up for the "protected athletes" who are white yet didn't name one (read his book ) When Bob Ley says Harold Reynolds told him minority players are questioning Sosa's homeruns, Canseco goes off because Ley cannot tell him one name. The guy is crazy and I don't understand why ESPN would bring on a drugged up loser to discuss baseball.
I saw Jose. It was hilarious how he'd just all of a sudden start yelling when Ley started to speak... pure comedy.
Canceso's crazy. That's all there is to it, just plain crazy. Sammy Sosa is the best thing MLB has going for it these days, and recently was named as the athlete with the greatest star appeal to Americans. A controversy is the LAST thing MLB wants, and it has absolutely nothing to do with his race or ethnicity.
I think I just heard on Fox News, the bat boy handed Sosa the wrong bat. Wait. I thought Sammy picked up the wrong bat. Anyways, doesn't a corked bat feel lighter than a regular bat? IMO Sosa was trying to get out of his slump. Fess up.
agreed. I don't think he's been using it, but he's just been in that nasty slump. I mean, the Stros staff just embarassed him.
