You know theres a point and time when you just have to say...i need to give it up. Truthfully i never appreciated stockton as a player until now. And i appreciate him as a man as well, hes a family man, he wants to let go and be there for his kids. He doesnt care about the endorsments, the call for fame in coaching. What stockton brought to the game was class, while stockton had pride being a jazz, he had pride in upholding his dignity because he represents so many people. Jordan on the other hand is addicted to fame. Jordan is addicted to attention, Jordan wants the going away tours (3 of them), Jordan wants to get his name out there , even more so now. Jordan is the most recognized face on the planet, he could be advocating disease, hunger, charity... yet he advocates ball park hotdogs, and hanes underwear, and now he wants in on the charlotte franchise. Dont get me wrong, hes thes best basketball player ever, but in terms of a man... i say... Jordan, go home, be a dad, make a difference.
How are you going to judge what type of a man and father MJ is by the ads he does and by his desire to stay in the game of basketball??? That's ludicrous. Do you know John Stockton or Michael Jordan personally? How can you be sure Stockton doesn't beat his kids, and MJ is the kindest best father on the planet? Sure, I am embellishing, but come on...... If you don't know them personally, you only know of what you hear in the media....which is NEVER biased or wrong. Right?
Jordand... did cheat on his wife. He did go publically with it after his mistress sued him. Just a thought.
Gambling problem was never really proven, although it was made public he had gambled on golf and such. But so do I (not on golf), and I don't have a "problem." Yeah, I guess he did cheat on his wife. Has Stockton?
"The Jordan Rules, a behind-the-scenes look at the Bulls, revealed a churlish, even cruel Jordan whose preternaturally competitive nature caused teammates and opponents alike considerable humiliation. There were subsequent reports about Jordan's gambling problems, suggestions that womanizing was hurting his marriage and declarations that the be-like-Mike image put out by his myriad endorsers was a sham. " http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/1999/jordan_retires/news/1999/01/13/mccallum/
You waited almost a year to post that. I don't think people worth $1,000,000,000 from playing basketball have gambling problems. Its not a problem till you start losing money.
Media media media..... Geeze, you still can't tell me he isn't out there making a difference because he was cruel to his teammates. You still can't tell me he's a bad father because he does commercials. Well, you can, but it would be a guess. Judge not.....
so you deny that making hanes, ballpark and battery commericials is ridiculous? what could he possibly do with another million dollars in making those stupid commericals? answer= hes addicted to attention
Jordan, the latter, is, indeed, a sad figure. However, Jordan addicted to attention is unique? If an athlete makes endorsement deals it is because (s)he is already well attentioned. The uniqueness of this 'attribute' is lost on me. I am sad for this period because he has fallen off a horse after taking a very strange ride. Stockton, on the other hand, handcuffed the Jazz for years by not allowing his team to plan for his end while waiting until the eve of training camp to 'decide to come back'. I do not need Jordan or Stockton or you to moralize athletes for me. None of you are worth it. Just keep it 'between the lines'. I'll save my moralizing for 'due process' when due, as in the sad case of Lugo and wife.
none of us are worth it? this is clutchcity.net not intro to ethics 101. this post is to discuss Jordan and Stockton, how about you not address the readers of clutchcity as "not worth" anything.
My heavens, put down by 'the truth' who knows all of the truth, all that is right. I am humbled by you.
I'm pretty sure he thought he could be a good baseball player. He was the greatest in basketball. He was pretty good in golf. Two very different sports. He thought he could win in any sport. He chose baseball to test it out. How else do you explain his "Second Coming" to the NBA? He could not feed his ego in baseball because he was not good enough to compete even in the Minor. So he dump baseball and got back to basketball where he could once again bolster his ego. Stockton, on the other hand, even without the media descriptions, is clearly a guy who doesn't care much about fame. (That doesn't necessarily equate having no ego.) And HOOP-T is right, we can't comment on Stockton's family life because we don't really know him personally. But if I had to trust my kids to either Jordan or Stockton, you can bet your life I'd take Stockton.
Why is it ridiculous? I mean, really? You are entitled to your opinion, certainly. But what seems ridiculous to you may not seem all that ridiculous to another. He may love the limelight, I don't know for sure. But who cares. He was put into the limelight whether he liked it or not, by being the best and/or most exciting basketball player on the planet. No, he didn't have to do the commercials, but if you are in the public eye, like it or not, you may as well get paid for it.
I have a friend at school who said they had actually met one of Jordan's kids at some kind of sports camp (can't remember which sport, but I don't think it was basketball). My friend said the kid was the meanest, most arrogant jerk he had ever met. I don't know if this can be attributed to Mike, or if the kid was just having a bad day. Plus, it was something mentioned in passing, and I never asked what the kid actually said or did. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if Mike isn't exactly doing his utmost to discourage arrogance in his kids. There's no media exaggeration in that.
The fact that Jordan is such an ultracompetitive, self centered jerk is part of what makes him such a great athlete.
Jees . . . .talk about going out of ya way to bash a guy and uplift another. Stockton? dignity. . . yeah hitting a guy in the nuts on a screen is so dignified. Being a dirty player is GREAT . . as long as you don't make a hanes commercial. People are People. .. . Rocket River
