This might be in the wrong forum, but for those that are interested, it appears that Damon is about to sign with the Pistons. It seems that the Rockets intentionally showcased him for the Pistons. The Rockets are definitely a class organization. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/bk/bkn/1106162 Oct. 25, 2001, 10:17PM Jones cut; Pistons deal near By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2001 Houston Chronicle SAN ANTONIO -- The Rockets took the surprising step of waiving veteran guard Damon Jones and keeping rookie Tierre Brown on Thursday. But the move was made in part to help Jones' career. The Rockets waived Jones, along with center Ike Nwankwo and guard Darren Kelly, partially because Jones had an opportunity with a team that could offer a chance to play. By Thursday evening, Jones was close to a deal that his agent Lamar Holt said would be worth a guaranteed $565,000 this season with the Pistons. "I kind of got mixed feeling about the situation," Jones said. "I really wanted to stay at home and play basketball and be around my family and friends and share that experience, the NBA experience with them. I knew the situation going into it. "I'm OK with it. There was the option to stay on injured list all year, not guaranteed. But it's my fourth year in the league, I've played. I have games under my belt. That was not the route to take. I had to sacrifice what I wanted to do and what my career needed me to do." The Rockets believed Brown would fit well into the limited role as the team's third point guard, and even found extra playing time for Jones against the Pistons on Tuesday to help him move on. Jones had 12 points with eight assists in 22 minutes against Pistons point guards Dana Barros and Chucky Atkins on Tuesday.
There aren't many teams that would do that for their players. Didn't CD also put a word in for Bullard in order to get him contract in Charlotte?. Imagine that, an organization that doesn't see its players simply as "assets" ( the GSW could learn a thing or two)
Very nice, further I wish Jones well in his new endeavor at Detroit. I agree with crispee's reasoning on not keeping him, but I really liked his quickness.
Great. Get ready to be burned by the guy when we face the Pistons... ex-rockets always seem to rise up to the occasion against us... swell. seriously, best of wishes to the guy, and what a classy organization the Rocks are.
I hope he does well there. He seems to be a good guy, and he's got the stuff to be a quality backup for some team.
So now that the cat is out of the bag and the IR is clearly just a place to stash your practice squad, should there be a rule change or two? Or could we potentially get in trouble for this? Clearly Damon was given the option to go on the IR by someone in the Rockets' organization.
