seriously- the guy campaigned vigorously on this issue- how come he keeps moving it on down the road?

Because in the grand scheme of things Gay anything is less important than healthcare, education, Iraqistan, and a plethora of other topics? Personally, I'm liberal and have a lot of Gay friends, but until healthcare is settled, I don't care if they can serve in the military or not. It's just not that important. Sorry.

I love how Basso is using this as an issue to debunk Obi, but if Obi actually ended DADT then Basso would create another forum on it. It's a Catch 22.

I don't believe that Obama should spend his political capital on DADT until other items on his domestic agenda are complete. Healthcare is more important, as are drawing down troops in Iraq, deciding what to do about Afghanistan, and continuing to work to turn the economy around.

basso has never demonstrated any genuine support of gay rights and many times has done things counter to the movement.

good point, there are far more important things. in fact i will use this time to prioritize the issues imo : )

    1. Edufriggincation - it's time to make the state more accountable
    2. Squash universal health care - it just won't work
    3. foreign policies - this is a delicate situation, don't half-ass a war, finish afghanistan and train the iraqis to protect themselves, stay out of iran unless absolutely necessary.

these three things are my top priorities, i can not stress enough that our education system is whack and needs to be improved and properly funded immediately

Before posting again, please learn what lying means.

Delaying, prioritizing etc. doesn't mean lying.

If I tell my wife on Monday that I will mow the lawn, but don't get to it until Saturday, does that mean I was lying to her from Tuesday to Friday?

Obama can't change DADT. It is a law, passed by Congress. It'
s up to them to change it.All he can do is ignore it and refuse to enforce it, thus turning DADT into a bull**** wedge issue for 20 years. Saying Obama flipped on gay rights is like saying LBJ and JFK flip flopped on civil rights. I mean, it took JFK three whole years to even get a bill to Congress, and even then they didn't pass it till LBJ took over. Since LBJ didn't get it done until 9 months after taking office himself obviously he didn't care about those darkies either.

Nor did Lincoln. I mean come on, the dude waited until half the country seceded to even pretend that slaves (in a country he no longer controlled rather than one he actually could do something about it in) were citizens. What a poser.

LBJ wouldn't have done a thing without MLK and millions who listened to him. If he or JFK had tried to completely overhaul everything within a few months of inauguration, they would have been crucified. This doesn't mean that I think those two didn't care about civil rights -- I think they were pragmatic and knew the limit of what they could get away with.

Basically I think those pushing for gay rights yesterday are the immediatists of our era.

Lincoln on the other hand was a gradualist, which is where more along the lines of where I stand. They argued that slavery would die a natural death as new states were added that voted through popular sovereignty to reject slavery, eventually isolating the original slave colonies in an increasingly tinier minority. They argued that instituting radical overhaul would cause too much social disruption, as most Americans, even if opposed to the idea of slavery, were still unwilling to support such major upheaval if it were dictated from above.

I believe that the Abolitionist movement needed the Immediatists. Without them constantly fighting for reform nothing ever would have changed. They gave the movement a conscience. Their argument was that Lincoln's approach to ending slavery was too pragmatic, too cold and calculating. Where is his heart, his passion for those poor women dying in childbirth, the child forced to plow fields while new states are slowly added and change comes at a glacial pace? It was furious criticism like the above that kept Lincoln (and other Presidents who are credited with winning the fights of common men) on track. Without it they might have compromised forever.

It's amusing that a known plagiarist would be so concerned about other people lying.
