    Radio Talk Show Host Indicted

HOUSTON, 6:02 p.m. CST November 12, 2003 - Radio talk show host Jon Matthews was indicted on one count of indecency with a child Wednesday, News2Houston reported.

A Fort Bend County grand jury handed down the sealed indictment Wednesday morning.

Officials told News2Houston that a teenager who lives in Matthews' Sugar Land neighborhood went to police Oct. 9 and made accusations against Matthews.

"Under the occasion contained in the indictment in early October, Mr. Matthews exposed his genitals to a child (a person under 17)," said John Healy, the Fort Bend County district attorney. "We have not alleged any contact."

Matthews surrendered to Sugar Land police Wednesday afternoon.

If convicted, Matthews could face from two to 10 years in prison, and a $10,000 fine.

Matthews has been a staple of Houston radio as a conservative talk show host, most recently on the KSEV AM morning show. He handed in his resignation, which was accepted, Wednesday.

    From the Chronicle...

    Matthews charged with child indecency

Outspoken talk show host arrested in Fort Bend County, freed on bond

RICHMOND -- Radio talk show host Jon Matthews, who has been a fixture of the Houston broadcast scene for more than a decade, was indicted by a Fort Bend County grand jury on a charge of indecency with a child.

The indictment, which was unsealed Wednesday after Matthews was arrested, alleges that Matthews knowingly and intentionally exposed his genitals to a girl under the age of 17 on Oct. 9.

"The indictment alleges there was exposure but not contact with the child," Fort Bend County District Attorney John Healey said.

The conservative talk show host, who also writes a column for a Fort Bend weekly newspaper, was taken into custody by Sugar Land police about 3 p.m. and driven to police headquarters. He was transferred to the county jail in Richmond, where he was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

Matthews, 59, made no statements to reporters as he left the jail Wednesday evening. His attorney, Stephen Doggett, also declined to comment.

The officer who delivered Matthews to the jail shortly after 5 p.m. lowered the sun visors of his car as he pulled into the facility to prevent news photographers from taking Matthews' picture.

The outspoken Matthews, who has been a constant critic of liberals, Bill Clinton and Houston Mayor Lee Brown's administration, resigned from his position at KSEV-AM 700.

Matthews often opened the segments of his show with the instrumental piece Rebel Rouser by Duane Eddy and had a loyal following of listeners who called the show frequently.

Station owner Dan Patrick told listeners Wednesday that the station will conduct a search for a replacement.

"We will move on," Patrick said. He said he couldn't comment on the charges but said an indictment does not mean someone is guilty.

"He maintains his innocence," Patrick said.

In addition to his 6 to 9 a.m. weekday program, Matthews also wrote a column for the weekly Fort Bend Southwest Star.

The newspaper's publisher, Beverly Carter, said she has not talked to Matthews about the case and has not heard from him for three or four weeks.

"It's a sad time for everybody involved. We'll have to let the legal system work it out."

When the investigation began, Matthews stopped submitting his column, she said.

Matthews, who served in the U.S. Marines, usually wrote about Fort Bend County issues, often railing against local school district officials whom he dubbed "educrats."

Matthews' column also led to a libel suit filed against him last year by former Sugar Land Mayor Dean Hrbacek.

The suit claims Hrbacek's reputation was damaged by Matthews, who called Hrbacek "Mayor Osama" and "Dean Osama Hrbacek," in reference to the terrorist leader.

Sugar Land police have released little information about the investigation, which began last month after an allegation against Matthews was made. Healey said the investigation began after the girl's parents contacted police through an intermediary. He declined to discuss details of the case.

The charge against Matthews is a third-degree felony. If convicted, he would face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The sealed indictment was issued Tuesday after Matthews spent about 90 minutes in the grand jury room at the Fort Bend County courthouse.

Matthews has been on the air on Houston radio stations since the mid-1980s, working at KSRR-FM and KPRC-AM before moving to KSEV-AM in March 2001.

Chronicle reporter Richard Stewart contributed to this story.

Very off topic, but John Healy's wife was the best teacher I've ever had. :)

This has got to be the dumbest, most immature response so far,

typical knee-jerk response that has nothing to do with the topic.

Rush admits to addiction, conservative response, Clinton

John Matthews gets caught exposing himself to child, conservative response, Jesse Jackson

    Well, he maintains his innocence....

I'd hate to condemn a man before his trial...oh wait aren't you guys complaining about that all the time?

Please cite any instance where Jackson has done anything remotely as bad as exposing himself to a minor. Oh, that's right, you can't, you are just trying to deflect criticism off of the conservative. Typical.

Jesse, while masquerading as a 'Reverend' voluntarily fornicated with a woman other than his wife. This woman had a child out of wedlock, with Jesse. This woman ran Jesse's Washington office. What an abuse of power. While Jesse was privately consulting President Clinton over his guilt in the Lewinsky situation, Jesse himself was guilty of the same thing, only worse.

This site lists quite a few addition goofs by Jesse.

Jeez guys, when comes down to a choice between a dude who cheats on his wife versus some dude who enjoys whacking off in front of little kids....I think I'm taking the former rather than the latter.

But apparently TJ and Bigtexxx prefer pedophilia to adultery...some gaps are just undbridgeable I guess.

No Sam, what your analysis needs to incorporate is the *aggregate* of Jesse's atrocities (racial slurs, extortion, adultery, lies about Dr. King, etc) and compare that collection to the one single crime *allegedly* committed by Matthews.

So are you saying that exposing yourself and indecenecy with a minor isn't as bad as marital infideltiy amongst adults?

The laws of this nation disagree with you, since one is against the law, and one is not. I disagree too.

And exactly how is this worse than EXPOSING YOURSELF TO A MINOR? Perspective, dude. Many people have affairs, but only truly sick individuals would expose themselves to a child.

You need to look up the definition of "atrocity." Here, I will do it for you:

Atrocity (from Dictionary.com) n 1: the quality of being shockingly cruel and inhumane [syn: atrociousness, barbarity, barbarousness, heinousness] 2: a act of atrocious cruelty [syn: inhumanity]

Nothing that you allege that Jackson has done even approaches atrocity and the very fact that you use that word to describe him exposes you as the partisan shill we all know.
