    Cato may play Wednesday

    BY JOHN DENTON
    FLORIDA TODAY

ORLANDO -- Orlando Magic center Kelvin Cato was close to returning Monday night, but will instead wait until Wednesday following an incident in practice in which he banged his injured left shoulder.

Cato has been out since Dec. 6 when he separated his left shoulder when he fell after colliding with Denver center Francisco Elson in midair. He has been working with weights the past two weeks in an attempt to strengthen the shoulder, and he has practiced on a limited basis the past week.

"He's improving and participating in everything that we're doing in practice," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "I'd be surprised if he doesn't play (against the Milwaukee Bucks). He's that close."

Cato said he got hit hard on the shoulder in practice during the weekend, an injury that caused him to postpone his return to Wednesday. Cato was playing particularly well before getting injured Dec. 6, averaging 13.5 rebounds during a four-game stretch. For the season, he is averaging 7.7 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.29 blocks a game.

"Really, I'm more worried about my conditioning now than I am my shoulder," Cato said.

    Trade ahead?

The Magic have made no secret that they are in the market for a third point guard to play behind Steve Francis and Jameer Nelson, preferably a veteran with playoff experience.

Davis said the team had no interest in either Jon Barry or David Wesley, guards recently acquired in trades by the Houston Rockets. Because the Magic already are deep at shooting guard, Davis wants a pure point guard who thinks pass first and shoot second. The problem is the pieces that the Magic are offering -- DeShawn Stevenson and Michael Bradley -- have little value around the league. That will almost assuredly change as the trade deadline approaches in February.

"Obviously that's an area that we're focused on," Davis said of the lack of depth behind Francis and Nelson. "That the area of our roster where we have the most vulnerability."

Some of the point guards that the Magic could have interest in are Tony Delk, Eric Snow and Jacque Vaughn.

    Quick hits

Francis has bought a house in suburban Orlando, but said that Central Florida still doesn't feel like home just yet. "I have a bed in the house, but not much furniture," he said. "It doesn't feel like home yet, but it will grow on me. It still feels like my rookie year after I went to Houston." . . . What does a teenage millionaire get himself for Christmas? Magic rookie Dwight Howard went to work modernizing the 1984 Crown Victoria car that he's driven since high school. "I put leather seats in it, a CD player and a completely new sound system," Howard said. "Old school cars are always the best ones. His next purchase? A 1964 Ford.

The Magic are looking for a PG ... they're only commenting on those two because they are guards who recently were on the market and dealt. In the case of Wesley, he "could" be somewhat considered a PG, but he's not really... and certainly not what the Magic would need in contrast of Francis and Nelson.

Orlando seems to be obsessed with taking shots at the Rockets. The ironic thing is that Orlando is off to a hot start, the Rockets stumbled out of the game, yet the Rockets are only a few games worse then the Orlando Magic, while playing in the West so really both teams are doing fine, all things considered. The deals for Barry and Wesley, in my eyes, were great deals for the Rockets that will benefit us greatly down the road. Wesley may not be a "pure passing" PG, but neither is Steve Francis. Ironically, the Rockets need a "pure passing" PG to back up Wesley.

Good point. Still, I get the feeling that Orlando (when I say Orlando I mean the media, not the organization) is always looking for a way to take a shot at the Rockets, more towards McGrady then the Rockets organization.

Uhm, I don't think there is much road left for either of those guys. :)

As far as the magic needing a 3rd pg to fill in behind their new franchise player and their new uber stud rookie ...

I hear Moochie is on the market. If he grows back his fro, I'm sure he'd be one of Wisebroods "guys".

You are right, I had same feeling. What I try to say is that even davis interest in Barry or Wesley, he cannot do anything to get them. so why he said this?

Like Clutch said, he commented on those guys because those guys were recently traded.

As much as we Rockets fans want to believe that the NBA universe revolves around us, the only reason they were commented on was because they were recently traded. They were the "pgs" available at the time he made the quote and he was just saying he didn't want that kind of guard. Anyone think a Eric Snow deal could be in the making for Orlando?

I think you all are reading too much into the Orlando media trying to take shots at the Rockets. Barry and Wesley were recently traded; who else do you expect them to comment on? Jim Jackson or Boki Nachbar? Not point guards. Tyronn Lue? They just had him last year and didn't like him, nor is he the answer. NBA teams are forbidden to talk about going after players under contract to another team to the press, so unless you think they are going to talk about someone like Schoonie Penn or soemthing, Barry and Wesley are all they can talk about.

What's so stupid about it is, how is that even taking a shot at the Rockets. I think some of these guys need to look in the mirror to see who's obssessed.

    The bigger question here to me is this;

Why is Orlando still looking a PG? Why are they looking specifically for a pass-first PG?

PS. I think Johnny Davis should be fired after the ASG or by the end of the season. I love hearing news of firings.

Dude, give it up. We all know you think Stevie can't run the PG. Hell, even pgab and all the Steve supporters have said as much in the past. The reason they're looking for a pass first PG is obvious: it'll probably help Steve's game and, in turn, the Magic. Chise can go for 11 assists and 2 TOs one night and then pull in opposite numbers the next. A little more stability from the PG will help the rest of the team. That doesn't mean SF is a bad player: just needs help, like almost everyone does.

I am not sure if anyone said that Steve is a bad player - so I don't know where you are going with that one.

So what are you saying - should he stay at the one position or move to two? Do you think Mobley will take moving back to the 6th man will sit well with him in his contract year?Or should they just ride it out this season at least?

We're Rockets fans; and most of us are Houstonians. Getting defensive is second nature to us: "Won the championship, not on the cover of SI"; "Houston is, uh, aesthetically challenged." Etc.
