Unitas dies of heart attack at 69 ESPN.com news services BALTIMORE -- Former Colts great Johnny Unitas, one of the top quarterbacks of all time, died Wednesday of a heart attack at the age of 69, a Ravens spokesman confirmed. Unitas was working out with a therapist when he suffered the heart attack. The Hall of Famer was taken to a Baltimore hospital where he was pronounced dead. When he retired in 1973, Unitas left behind records for most pass attempts (5,186), most completions (2,830), most total yards (40,239), most touchdowns (290), most 300-yard games (26) and most consecutive games throwing touchdown passes (47). He led the Colts to one Super Bowl title, three NFL championships, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
Man, I thought those "power boots" would make him immortal. There goes one of my childhood sports heroes.
I've only seen him on film, but he was without a doubt my father's favorite football player when he was growing up, he says only Montana is an equal at QB. Thoughts & prayers to the Unitas family.
