The guy has to have the biggest pinecone up his ass of all sports bear writers. If you can't feel any worse about Texans losses, he finds a way. It's comical to read his updates and see how insanely bad the adjectives are he uses when the team does something bad and how mild his compliments are when they do something good. The only good thing the guy can do is find out new and exciting ways he can talk down Houston's team. Everyone in that organization must find the guy annoying as hell. My favorite comment of the day was his slam against the OFFENSE for screwing up at the end when the offense moved to the 1 yard line and 1 guy ****ed up and dropped the ball.
He just has high expectations for this franchise and when they fail he's mad about it. Can't blame him.
I agree. This guy writes like a fan and not like a writer. I never hear him rip Frank Bush because that’s his friend and he publicly wrote that the Texans should hire him. He is an old fart who always is writing about the damn Houston Oilers like their still here. He has written like 50 stories on James Casey since he got drafted. Dude always is plugging that terrible movie he is in.
I think McClain is just frustrated like every other Texans fan. Watching this same stuff for 8 seasons can get to you. But I do disagree with him about the lost against the Jets was the worst in franchise history. I would say the 2005 game vs the Seahawks on national tv was as bad as it could get.
I have heard a lot of McClain and not once have I found him insightful. For years all he ever offered was "well gee the Texans need to get better on the line". I think he is absolutely horrible. Hate his accent too. Him and Justice man. I just cant stand em.
Nobody is as bad as Richard Justice. Just amazing to me how that guy actually gets a pay check to be that bad. He has one blog about how the astros problem is drayton mcclane blah blah blah then 2 days later he writes another blog about how great of an owner drayton is. Unbelievable.
Don't ever compare the two, ever. One guy writes what he believes, and the other guy writes what he thinks will get the most page hits. McClain is old school. He's not going to blow a zillion stats up your butt and try to fool you a mountain of manure. He's the last of his kind, and I'll be sorry to see writers like him fade away, especially compared to the trolls, divas, and sycophants that make up the majority of sport's "journalism" today.
Seems to me that every Chron writer who appears on local sports radio stations (McClain, Justice, Hoffman) is annoying.
While Mcclain isn't right all the time (and nobody is), he is the most insightful of anybody that covers the Texans. Part of that is because there really isn't much competition in Houston media (especially from his own colleagues), and part of it is because the Texans spoon feed him and let him get closer to the team than most. Like him or not he usually has a good handle on the way things really are and knows what he's talking about. His opinions aren't always on base but that's why it's an opinion. I think he's just tired of seeing the same thing year after year, so he's not going to go overboard and give them too much credit until they prove it.
They deserve it. The dude's a columnist. I don't care if there's one guy in the crowd of talking heads out there that takes his approach. Better than nothing but vanilla, 'safe' comments that sugarcoat (or piss on for attention) everything. At this point I don't mind someone being pissed off at the Texans.
It's sad because here in Austin, they think he's some kind of god. Both stations will bring him on and actually use the words, "One of the best in the business..." when introducing him. It makes me nauseated.
He is still mad that they didn't draft Vince. The Chron was practically running a campaign to have him drafted. Get over it McCLain, Vince sucks too.
Damn for real? He must get on and kiss up to the Longhorns out there. He gets air time on MLB Network and that joke of a show P.T.I.

This. People look at him and hear the accent and think he's some folksy ol' coot. But he's just true old school, what comes from the heart comes out his mouth, and comes out on paper. Agreeable content or not, objective talented writer or not (mostly not) one thing you can say of McClain is he's geniune. If he likes Vince Young, he's gonna tell you he likes Vince Young, and write that he likes Vince Young. And still go on to the Texans facilities and cover them.
I can't stand him either. My problem with him is that he is the biggest namedropper in the business and he thinks of himself as the greatest human being of all time. Everytime He is on the radio, alls he talks about is who he knows, what he does with them, and all his accomplishments. When I first moved here, I actually liked him in little spurts giving updates, but now he is on constantly and all he can do to fill his time is talk about himself. I am one who changes the channel now when he comes on. He is not as bad as John Lopez, though. That guy is the biggest douche on the radio.
That is pretty stupid. The offense ran pretty well, barring that mistake. There's nothing wrong with the call to your big back to run it in for a 1-yard TD. Absolutely nothing. The blame lies entirely on the defense being unable to stop the average Jacksonville offense.
