Instead of running an Ad that emphasis John McCain's policy positions, he runs an attack on Obama during the opening cermonies on NBC. Tacky....tasteless. This guy has show he has no character anymore........
Whatever...He was showing the distinction of Obama being for higher taxes and more government spending, while EMPHASIZING his position of being better than that... I give you a Yao Ming "whatever" in the spirit of the Olympiac ceremony...
At least the ad was about issues (kind of), but it really didn't fit the mood of the opening ceremony. All this stuff about unity and optimism, and then an attack ad?
Sorry, but this is a lie. Obama wants to raise the capital gains tax, which would affect HALF of Americans.
It wasn't by chance this ad was it? http://rawstory.com//printstory.php?story=11865 McCain's 'Painful' ad against Obama uses 'widely debunked' material 08/08/2008 @ 1:50 pm Filed by Associated Press TITLE: "Painful." Advertisement LENGTH: 30 seconds. AIRING: In 11 key states where McCain ads already are on the air. SCRIPT: Announcer: "Life in the spotlight must be grand, but for the rest of us times are tough. Obama voted to raise taxes on people making just $42,000. He promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family. Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget. Not ready to lead. That's the real Obama." John McCain: "I'm John McCain and I approved this message." KEY IMAGES: The spot opens with a montage of cheering crowds, flashing cameras, Obama waving to supporters, Obama's picture on covers of magazines like GQ, US Weekly and Vanity Fair. It is followed by images of a woman and two children with the words, "Obama: Raise taxes on middle class"; of two women in a floral shop, "On small business"; of an elderly woman, "On seniors"; and of a woman and child, "Your family." A smiling Obama appears with the words "Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget, not ready to lead." The final image is one of McCain. ANALYSIS: The McCain campaign's oft-repeated assessment of Obama's tax proposals is based, in several instances, on outdated material that has been widely debunked. Obama has said his plan would raise taxes on single people making more than $200,000 and couples making more than $250,000, which by all measures doesn't add up to middle class. The ad's most specific assertion - Obama voted to raise taxes on people making $42,000 - is based on a nonbinding Senate budget resolution early this year that the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 be allowed to expire in 2011 as scheduled. Obama has criticized the Bush tax cuts and called for ending them for the wealthiest taxpayers. McCain didn't support Bush's tax cuts when they were passed but has said he supports them now. He contends that to allow the cuts to expire would be tantamount to a tax increase. The broader charge that Obama promised more taxes on small businesses, the elderly, "life savings" and families - what the McCain campaign called "painful taxes" resulting in "hard choices for your budget" - is based on an overly broad reading of the Obama budget plan. "Even though a host of independent, nonpartisan organizations have said this attack isn't true, Sen. McCain continues to lie about Sen. Obama's plan." Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan. The ad continues the McCain campaign argument that Obama is a celebrity. By showing no men, the ad makes its appeal directly to women, a group polls show leans toward Obama. By saying Obama is not like "the rest of us," the spot also adds to what Obama contends is part of the GOP effort to make voters fearful of him personally. In support of its ad, the McCain campaign cites the nonpartisan Web site Factcheck.org, which has been critical at times of McCain's spots, contending they contain false or misleading information. For example, the site says McCain's charge that Obama would raise taxes on small businesses is false, contending that the vast majority of small-business owners would see no change and that many others would see their taxes fall. When a reporter on Aug. 1 asked McCain about Factcheck's criticism, McCain said he didn't respond to Web sites but added that "I have no idea what they're talking about." Factcheck also points out misstatements and overstatements in ads supporting Obama's candidacy. Analysis by Douglass K. Daniel.
Fact check is a great source...The proplem for liberals at times, is it cuts both ways and I have used an example of one of their analysis in the past to show Bush' 13 words were not actually a lie regarding a SOTU address in a thread topic... One thing that is not in dispute is that Obama voted for the Democrats 2009 tax plan which is as follows: The Democrats' Budget Would Raise Taxes On Individuals Earning As Little As $31,850. "Under both Democratic plans, tax rates would increase by 3 percentage points for each of the 25 percent, 28 percent and 33 percent brackets. At present, the 25 percent bracket begins at $31,850 for individuals and $63,700 for married couples. The 35 percent bracket on incomes over $349,700 would jump to 39.6 percent." (Andrew Taylor, "Presidential Hopefuls To Vote On Budget," The Associated Press, 3/13/08) In other words, higher taxes for the majority...That is what Obama has voted for...
have you been paying attention to the markets lately? A higher capital gains tax wouldn't affect me at all, and I am heavily invested in the market. Most americans aren't impacted by the capital gains tax over a 4 year period. Because most Americans aren't day traders. They are investing long term, so even if the value of their stocks go up, they don't sell and thus don't realize a gain for many many years - and thus the only people who have to worry about paying capital gains taxes are the elderly who are selling their positions for the cash. Anyway, a 15% capital gains tax versus a 20% capital gains tax won't make a difference to most people. It's so low already. As for taxes versus spending - let's realize something, bush ran a massive deficit of record porportions and mccain would continue that. How is that suppose to be wise? it's not.
I've really lost all faith in the Republican party. I thought it was just Bush, but this....now with McCain? What's going on? Are republicans this cynical now? I mean, it really does shake my faith in the notion of a balance as a moderate. The impeachment of Clinton was a farce, and then Bush and now this. And to see people brag about the Clinton impeachment - it was totally a republican smear campaign. They did it to Clinton, they did it to Kerry, and now they are doing it to Obama. I've always thought of myself as a moderate, but it seems now that the moderate party is the Democrats.
The difference is striking. Obama's opening ad for the Olympics "Hands" <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tz7m2JhVOdY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tz7m2JhVOdY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> John McSame isn't in the same class as Barack Hussien Obama.
I actually saw the ad, during the otherwise uplifting parade of nations. Incredibly negative, factless, and telling about McCain's new embrace of the politik typik. The idea that any GOP entity of any sort can caw about "Obama will increase government spending," when it's impossible to break the records set by the Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II credit-card-uber-alles whitehouses, just blows me away. Are their really Americans who think Obama can somehow print money faster than these people who put our budget on the brink of disaster? GW Bush has announced a new record deficit THIS YEAR. Do you really think Obama won't have the good sense, and the bright advisors, to avoid digging a deeper hole? Even if he surrounded himself with idiots, I submit to you that it's not possible to be more irresponsible with the federal budget than GWB. I really thought I'd maintain sympathies for both campaigns through the selection of VPs, but I think that's over. McCain now supports the Bush tax cuts, supports torture, has become as negative and regressive as Bob Dole in his tone, and now claims liberals spend more than republicans. Obama could select Karl Malone or Ann Colter as a running mate, and I'd still vote for him at this point. That wasn't true two weeks ago, where Hillary would have lost my vote. I'm B-Bob and I approve of this message.
(edit: out of date) post ROXRAN (edit: according to Brookings -- see tax thread). IMHO, sanity says we need to start paying down the f*ing credit cards before the bank (China) goes repo on America.
Oh it gets better... from a screen shot of the ad As TPM Reader ES notes, the mag covers appear to have been stacked to create the name "Mao." And as he says, this comes just when we're all watching the Olympics and seeing all of those bic pics of him, and it's the only cover stacked in that manner. http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/
Capital gains tax doesn't affect day traders. if you hold less than a year you pay 35% or whatever your tax bracket is. It is quite indicative of mccain that all his ads feature obama.
Obama will work with terrorists to Make America less safe. He's spend more money, and he'll tax everyone until they have no money left. He's raise your taxes so high we'll enter into another great depression. Obama is actually Osama. He's also Balack. And Hussein. Obama is not smart. He's elitist and will not work with you unless you eat asparagus. He's will walk on Rose petals while everyone is starving. Obama will make your gas prices rise to 30 dollars a gallon. He's force you to drive mo-peds. He'll ban the pledge of allegiance. He'll ban the flag and fly Hamas's flag over the white house. Obama will surrender in Iraq. He will beg the terrorists for mercy. He'll give Israel away. he'll send our troop home and have them all placed in labor camps. I am trader jorge and I approve this message.
