Hollinger's subjective analysis is good, but he's mistaken when he keeps referring to "adjusted +/-". The basketballvalue numbers he's using are not adusted +/- ... its On/Off defensive rating. Calculated very differently.

Interesting, but his stats are strange....they seem to be nebulous at best, and didn't Ron guard mostly SF's this year, with Battier doing the heavy lifting of SGs?

    Either way, nice recognition...

In the past, he created a metric called "points saved", based on the On/Off numbers and how many minutes the player played. Not sure why he scrapped that.

Defense is really hard to sum up in a few numbers. I wonder if the Rockets have made any advances in that area, internally.

i dont think they try to create "summary" stats. going off of what i've heard from morey, he prefers more granular stats and analysis.

Chuck is the best defender on the team by a mile. Too bad he doesn't get more minutes but it's nice that he is recognize despite this.

I think it depends on what they're using it for. To help their coaches out, more detailed statistics makes sense. If they're trying to gauge how much they improve with a free agent signing or trade, then the summary stats can be useful (e.g. "how many wins might this guy add to our team?").

How do you feel about that?

I've always loved the way he wasn't afraid to use his own logic, using the stats as more of a tool for understanding than blindly considering it as 'evidence'.

I think that's how you have to do it. Hollinger's subjective analysis has always been very good ... team/player breakdowns before each season have a wealth of information. I think he gets a bad rap as a guy who only looks at numbers and doesn't watch the games.

If I had to fault him, I think he puts too much stock in his PER, understandable because that's sort of like his baby. I'd like him to branch out a bit more and provide more analysis that isn't purely based on the box score.

I just like that there was a one-time Rocket at every single position at least getting mention.

If he were doing a all-defensive team of bench players I bet you'd see Chuck and maybe even Kyle Lowry on there.

Give Lowry 2 years and I could see him on that list for starters.

Agreed. Defensive players should be almost exclusively judged by watching their performance. Call me crazy but people love to talk about defensive rebounds. IMO that makes you a good rebounder, not necessarily defender. If you want to include defensive rebounds you should combine it with charges, passing lane steals, and opponent shots changed and label it defensive impact.

He can thank Van Gundy for that. JVG couldn't do the impossible, give him a consistent shot worth a damn, but he made Rafer a decent defender.

Ron is definitely overvalued. He gambled too much and sometimes lost focus.

Shane is much undervalued. He just kept fighting like Luis and Rafer. But health problem did affect shane's game in the early of the season.

Rafer is the pg of 3rd defensive team. Some recognition finally.

Yao should be in 1st/2nd team even though he's defense liability sometimes.
