Has anyone else read this book? If so, I would desperately like to discuss... Spoiler Four hundred and eighty four pages, 2 round trip flights, and a considerable amount of my holiday I spent on this thing, all for the bad guy to win? After I read "Playing for Pizza" I thought this book would be worth my time. It seemed that he (Grisham) kinda gave up 7/8 of the way through the book. I feel extremely let down by the ending, and am really disappointed what I consider to be a less than affable character conclusions.
Spoiler I agree 100%, and what made it worse was how the plaintiff attorneys just laid down at the end like "Oh well we lost, we're done". I like Grisham and with a few exceptions (The Chamber) this was possibly his worst outing. Even The Street Lawyer, which took a long time for me to get interested in, was not as bad as this one. I toook this out of the spoiler tag. If you have not read playing for pizza it is a very good book, and a nice change of pace from the normal Grisham courtroom drama, although th emain character could have easily been playing for the Oilers, with his NFL performance.
I really liked the book and while you may not get the ending that you had hoped for, sometimes the good guy doesn't win. It isn't his first book where the person you are wanting to succeed, does not. One of my very favorite Grisham books ends like that. I actually think that his next book is about the same character that I'm talking about. I don't want to say which book it is so I do not spoil it for someone that hasn't read it.
OK at least I'm not the only one who was felt like I had somehow been taken advantage of. Spoiler If Carl Trudeau had ONE redeeming quality then I would have felt better, but as described he is despicable creature not worthy of such a victory. Fisk chosing the retirement home case over Bowman just wasn't good enough.
