I am sure we all learned about john brown and Harpers Ferry in middle school. His action could be considered terrorist actions, and he got hanged for them, but he was trying to free the slaves so can you consider his actions bad?

Black here, but in a civil society, murdering private citizens is a greater sin than whatever injustice is being protested. Also; even though it wasn't published or quoted very often, one of the reasons MLK stated he supported non-violent resistance was, very clearly, that "blacks would lose" an armed struggle.

Of course his actions are horrible and he deserved the punishment.

The definition of terrorism has certainly been watered down in recent years. The word "terrorist" in the poll proves case in point. Thanks to 9/11 and our politicians, "terrorists" no longer have rights. Too bad this wasn't fixed between 2008-2010 when the advocate party promised to deliver these rights.

John Brown was a traitor much more so than a terrorist. Our country was founded on treason and many heros were born during this time. The same with the Texas revolution.

Terrorists or freedom fighter depends on what side you sympathize with and which side wins. If the British had crushed the American Revolution many of those who fought for the revolutionary cause would go down as terrorists, particularly those who fought in the Continental Militia and other irregular units.

Terrorist or freedom fighter is win dependent. Mandela was a terrorist and then he wasn't.

Yup. Menachem Begin, one time head of the Irgun before independence, and future Prime Minister, blew up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, a place I stayed at in the 1960's. Terrorist/Patriot/Prime Minister. Depends on where you stand, and the time in history.

Except Mandela wasn't a terrorist later not just because the ANC won but also because he gave up violent methods for effecting change. Also rather than call for retribution against White South Africans he called for reconciliation and understanding.

It depends on what religion he was and which direction he faced when he prayed...

An irrelevant question by those who seek to impose morality on history.

The least you can do . . . . right?

Understanding the inability to win . . . and which sin is greater . . .are two different things

    IMO, you are wrong Sir.
You would tell me .. . . protesting the lynching of thousands by killing one . . .
means that killing the one is a greater sin???? that is ridiculous
That means you have put a valuation on that one life. . .that surpasses all the others .. . . I cannot agree to that.

and. . . . right on cue . .. when folx wanna justify some BS . . they drag MLK out and fling him around like a big fish.

Was never really sure what to think about John Brown......yea I learned a little about him but I never studied him in-depth.

Assuming his motives were truly in favor of the enslaved Africans then I have no issue with him.

When you support a system that denies a person and their children the basic rights all humans are entitled to then you deserve whatever fate comes to you......that includes death.
