http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs05/news/story?id=2321024 Reports: Money differences leave QBs out ESPN.com news services When the NFL unveiled its MVPs from the previous 39 Super Bowls, only three living members skipped the ceremony. Former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana and former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw decided to stay home, while former Dolphins MVP Jake Scott was traveling in Australia. Montana, the league's only three-time Super Bowl MVP, turned down the invitation over money, Newsday and the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Bradshaw, who told league officials that he wanted to be with his family, also took issue with the fees, the Chronicle reported. Bradshaw, through a representative, denied the Chronicle's report that there was a dispute over money. Former MVPs were given $1,000 for incidental expenses while in Detroit, along with other amenities such as plane tickets, car rental and game tickets. Sources told each paper that Montana asked for a guarantee of at least $100,000 in appearance money. When the league balked at Montana's demands, the quarterback declined to be in attendance.
money hungry guy... great qb? yes. asking for 100k+? loser! must be broke to be asking for that kind of cash O_O
mike and mike were talking about this on their show this morning on espn. was really disappointed to hear that. I understand these guys have to make money on their fame, they would be stupid not to cash in, but showing up at some convention to speak and showing up at this ceremony are two different things. the nfl provided him an opportunity to be famous and make money just from being joe montana.
They were just trying to celebrate the great super bowl players from the past and to let money come into it makes me lose a lot of respect for Joe Montana.
Yea, this disappoints me too. But John Elway or Terrell Davis or Jerry Rice couldn't have been asked to appear? I just thought it was incredibly tacky to have a still active player participate in this.
I always hated is cocky ass in SF. He should go back to doing lame TV commercials, where he runs around in full pads and looks like an idiot.
Terry Bradshaw's getting a free ride in this thread. Considering he played for the Steelers, he could have shown up.
I have a hard time believing this. I just heard on Cold Pizza that Montana wanted to be at his son's basketball game or something like that...whether that's true or not, I have a hard time believing he demanded a fat paycheck for a trip to the Super Bowl. That's like a player demanding money to show up at their retirement ceremony. I'll hold off judgement till I hear something from both sides. Right now this sounds like fabrication to me.
this isn't some story floating around people's emails. I'm sure that's the case. now I'm also sure Montana will come out with press release giving a different reason but I don't know why you would think its fabricated.
i was shocked to not see bradshaw there. i mean he was part of the steel curtain and i figured he would love to be there with his old teammates and see the steelers win the one for the thumb. i would like to believe that money wasnt the issue with bradshaw since he has a job doing fox sunday morning football. but it was just a bit strange
What is wrong with that? It is his time, if he doesn't want to go, he shouldn't. He put a price tag on attending, and they declined, end of transaction. No one hurt..... DD
Is that why Tom Brady was flipping the coin toss?? I didn't understand why Tom Brady would be there besides winning the previous superbowl
