I interviewed for a job last Friday and the hiring manager sent me an e-mail today saying that his only concern is that my GPA is below company standards. I interpreted the e-mail to say that this was the only thing holding me back (he practically said that in the e-mail). So how do I respond to his e-mail? Should I ask him to contact my profs for references? Should I ask some of my profs to e-mail him with a recommendation? I really want this job and I don't want my GPA to be the only thing holding me back. Apparently my work experience and skill set are ideal for the position. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.
Lots of time, if your GPA in your major is higher than your overall, they will accept that. Point out GPA in classes relevent to your job, ect. So if you are going for a Finance position, and your finance classes had As and Bs, but you got Cs and Ds in Chemistry, lost of times they will overlook those. So see if you can break it out a little differently. My Major GPA was a point higher than my overall, and that is all that my employer cared about.
What in the hell kind of job gives a crap about a GPA? I'd tell him that my real world experience greatly out weighs my lack of test taking. While there may be people out there that can make a better grade than I do, I am able to apply my experiece to situations that a text book can never cover. LOL at GPA.
Wow - A company who makes decisions based upon arbritary scoring at a University..RUN AWAY !!! If not, then write him and say that he is free to talk to your professors, and that you really would like the chance to prove that GPA is not the true measure of your value as an employee and that if they did choose to hire you, they would be glad they did. Fight for it a bit. DD
I wonder if you are up against someone with similar work experience and skills, but they have a much higher GPA. Most companies don't even look at GPA unless you are a college hire. I know that I've been out of school for 4 years now and I don't even bother to put my GPA on my resume'. You must still be young enough to be considered a "college hire" or you are in competition with other folks that are college hires.
Not that it matters, but I finished UH with a 2.99 GPA. Sort of like the Cougars losing to Miami by one point on Saturday.
Unless you are in one of those theoretical research positions which requires phds, GPA isn't very useful guide in hiring in my opion, as long as you reach a certain level. Now if you are all like 2.0 or something that's another story.
I have never included my GPA in my resume or cover letter for a job. Of course I had related job experience. My philosophy is out of site out of mind. What is this some kind of internship? Anyway it sounds like they are using that as an excuse not to hire you b/c they decided on someone else.
I worked at a lot of companies, mostly fortune 500 and none of them has ever asked me for my GPA. I've only had one actually verify my degee. If you you really want the job, you need to find out what they are looking for in a candidate and position yourself for the job. If your GPA is holding you back, then you may want to reconsider working for this person because he doesn't know how to guage talent.
Tell him the lower GPA was because you spent too much time banging him mom. BURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just say that your GPA isn't represenative of your capabilities. You have shown that you are now older and more mature and quite capable of delivering in the business world. Stress what you've done lately - kicked ass at your current job and downplay the past.
