I have been at my current job since Dec. 2002 which for staff at a College is longer than most. I like the people I work with a lot and enjoy helping students. The downside is I am BARELY making it financially. I had to have a major repair done on my Jetta (again) and if not for credit cards, I would have been in DEEP trouble. The higher ups at my job have been promising a raise for a LONG LONG time. Now there is a change in the chain of command and THEY have promised a raise and a title upgrade. That was supposed to happen in January, then "for sure" February, then by Spring Break, end of May, end of Summer, now they are saying October. They say it is not their fault and there is a funding crunch but I feel like I am being strung along. They somehow found money to pay for other stuff for new positions, etc but don't seem too worried about me. I applied for a position in another department several months ago but was passed over because it was one of those postings where they had someone in mind but were required by HR to post it. Now another guy who is leaving that department told his boss that I would be an ideal person to replace him. (Pretty cool huh!) I doubt I would get much of a raise at the new job, if any, but feel like my work load would go WAY down. The amount of students I would be responsible for would likely be around 20% of what I am responsible for now so I could give them a lot more attention individually. Additionally this department is closer to my former major and there is a fair amount of pre-law students, and I think I could really help them out. How long would you hold out on the hope for more money in a job you were starting to dread?
If i where you i would definately start looking for new jobs, and dont limit yourself to working at colleges, just out of curiosity which college are you working for?
Not long at all, but I'm a consultant and I'm all about the $$$. I've jumped ship several times for more money and have moved across the US just for good opportunities. I don't know if I'm one for good advice because I'd pretty much sell my soul to make more money. Sometimes I gamble too much but I like the high risk, high reward. Right now I'm in the middle of a high reward and I'm gonna milk it for all its worth. I'd never stick around in a ****ty paying job, there are too many opportunities out there if you look for them.
I promise you some advice soon. It will happen in January. For sure by February, Spring Break, end of May, end of Summer, or end of October. Stay tuned. The truth is out there. Seriously, though, why not try at my campus? Oh, WTF, they pay less here.
I never stay for a promise. Evaluate where you are and if you wouldn't stay if the promise doesn't happen --- move on. If they really wanted to give you a raise/promotion they would have.
Maybe but I would probably stay part time at law school. It would certainly give me more contact with the Law School here and having contacts at two law schools would be a very good thing once I get my JD. Although it has been posted on the board before I would rather not say at this time because I don't want word to get out that I might be looking elsewhere (just yet). For other posters who are reading this, if you know me or where I work, keep this under your hat. My immediate boss knows I am unhappy with my salary so he wouldn't be too shocked, but I think my students would freak out and that might cause a lot of problems.
I would jump ship, but like Master Baiter I go where the opportunity is. I just left my job of 3.5 years about 3 weeks ago. It was getting too stressful so I left for less stress and more money. Gotta love that. Loved the people I worked with too but it's not like I can't hang out with them anymore. The stress of your current job and the low-pay has got to be enough to get you to move. Get over that stagnant inertia and go find a new job. Your current contacts at the law school won't go away.
I applied for the other job. My co-workers don't know. I will wait to see if I get a call back and will keep ya'll posted...
