I don't have a link but in the Dallas Morning News there's a blurb about Jimmy Johnson coaching the Texans. Thoughts?
Here's a little piece from the Chron. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3453913 Looks like he would want the GM and coach position.
I would love it he has a track record Even in Miami I think he was better than . . .what we have here Rocket River
Yeah, as time has gone by I've become less critical of the big ego. I think when you point at great coaches they all have it. I'd love to see Jimmy come to Houston, and he's from Port Arthur IIRC so its not like he's new to South Texas. Plus he could stick it to Jerry everytime we win a Super Bowl. I thought he did an AWESOME job with Miami's D and their offense would have been ok but they never could get that stud RB he needed. I think Davis, Carr, and Johnson would do just fine under Johnson.
Maybe since he has been retired he wouldn't want to work that hard, so just make him GM to manage the talent, contracts and drafts. I'm sure Gary Kubiak would be fine with that as head coach.
I don't think JJ looks like he needs to take it easy. I say give him GM and coach and get rid of CC, DC and staff.
I've pretty much hated JJ, his plastic hair and the plastic Cowboys all these years, but the pool of good coaching canidates seems so weak to me, I'm just about ready to say 'plastic hair' ain't so bad.
Bring it. Im down with JJ. He's had enough off time to cool the ego and hair. Seriously though, this is an excellent choice for head coach and a GM. Are there others in the NFL that pull the double duty? Cant think of any off the bat.
*IF* JJ comes here I think he would want to make an IMMEDIATE impact and I know ya'll don't wanna hear it . . . . I could see him bringing in T.O. HONESTLY *IF* we get the #1 Pick JJ would probably roll with Carr [Aikman] Draft Reggie Bush [Emmit] and get T.O. [Irvin] along with A. Johnson and try to recreate the glory days I'm not saying any of those players are of the caliber of those in brackets [except maybe T.O] then he would spend the rest of the draft on linemen Defense and offense IF we do these things. . .we could SERIOUSLY be 8-8 next year If we get a decent line Even Carr could get the ball to T.O. and A.J. Rocket River
Normally I'd say giving a guy coach + gm would be a mistake. But in this case it would be a huge positive. Not because JJ is a coaching gawd, but because it would ensure that both Dom and Cassie get the boot, as opposed to just one of them. Even if JJ failed, it would be a step in the right direction to get those goofballs out of the organization. And yes, JJ was awesome in D, and had a lot of things go his way. But the rest of the league caught up to him and he really wasn't that great in Miami.
I agree with you on the TO and Bush talk. JJohnson's ego will tell him that he can handle TO just like he did Michael. I perfectly see such a scenario playing out assuming JJ is named coach/GM. But what will he do with DD's new contract? Trade him? You cannot have Bush's huge money and DD's together.
Can Bush be an everydown back in the NFL? Either way I think we need to strengthen the line in the draft.
Hire JJ...his career speaks for itself: In 1977, Johnson went to Pittsburgh as their assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. In his two years there he ran one of college football's all-time great defenses. His 14 years as an assistant coach finally ended in 1979 when he took over the rebuilding of the Oklahoma State team as head coach. Taking over a losing program at Oklahoma, Johnson turned it around. In his five seasons there, the team compiled a 29-25 record and had two bowl appearances. Johnson continued his success as head coach of the University of Miami from 1984 to 1988. He led the Hurricanes to a 52-9 record (44-4 over the final four seasons), snagged two Orange Bowl titles and a national championship, and won 36 straight regular season games from 1985 to 1988. The team had the fifth longest winning streak in NCAA history and had 20 consecutive road wins in the four years Johnson was coach. On February 25, 1989, Johnson was named by Jerry Jones as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He took only one season to bring the team from one win or less per season to playoff qualification, fewer seasons than any other team. In 1991, the team sent four players to the Pro-Bowl, the first since 1979. The Cowboys were the first team in NFL history to produce the leading rusher, Emmit Smith, and receiver, Michael Irvin, in the same year. The 1991 playoff was the Cowboys' first post-season win since 1982 and their first road playoff victory since the 1980 season. The club's 11-5 record in 1991 was their best since 1983. Johnson remained with the Cowboys until 1994 and led them to 2 Super Bowl victories.
