I don't know if this has been posted before and i know adam dunn is light years younger but what about thome? Is he strike out prone like dunn? He plays the same position as bagwell i'm aware but if we could manage to get a homerun threat like him that would be a huge help..... feel free to lock if a re-post......
Jim Thome is one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet. But he's reaching that age where all of the old school, classic (non-roided) sluggers start to decline rapidly. The Astros should be more concerned with the future anyway, regardless of how this season plays out for them. Unless Thome is DFA'd, which won't happen, I don't think anyone will even consider taking on his monstrous contract.
I think we should make a run at him. Stick him in our lineup and we become the favorites to win the Wild Card and have a legitimate shot at getting to the World Series. I think that's worth mortgaging some of our future, just as in the Beltran trade.
No way! 1st of all he's on the DL as we speak. It's not just his back bothering him anymore, he's getting elbow tendanitis now. He's also hitting .207 (which ironically is a higher avg. then when he has RISP.) He's striking out almost as much as Dunn, who makes about 9 million less and is restricted for 2 more seasons following this one. Not to mention Dunn is 9 years younger and plays the LF. He wouldn't be mortaging the future so much as being part of it as he is from Houston.
Jim Thome is done. D-O-N-E. Done. All you hear about on talk radio here in Philly is, "Can we deal Thome so Ryan Howard can play first?" Followed by the announcer saying, "Who's going to take Jim Thome at $15+ mill for three more years?" Did I mention he's done? Can't even get around on pitches any more.
