There have been a few complaints recently about how bad Houston sports call-in shows become when some yahoo from the burbs calls in with some outrageous trade proposal or outright ignorant remark. It got me thinking. How does Jim Rome manage to maintain a high level of entertainment *and* retain control of his program throughout 4 hours of live broadcast a day? Here are my thoughts:

    1) Rome never answer questions -- The callers are trained to call in with "takes" or opinions, not questions for Jim. This keeps Jim in command of the conversation as his role becomes one of critiquing the callers and not a defensive role of answering foreign questions.

    2) Rome is quick to hang up on callers -- If they are slow, or their call drags on or is boring, they get zapped. 610 call-in shows are *way* too nice to the callers. They allow that clown Collie to ramble on and on about NOTHING. I heard Vandemeer today fielding calls about basketball players "having the funk". my god that was bad conversation.

    3) Qualified, decisive opinions -- Rome does more homework than anyone in the business. His opinions are well researched and solid. He does not waver on them at all and is very prepared to take a side. He is just over-prepared in general which makes him a stud.

    4) Rome utilizes emails and faxes -- Instead of rolling the dice on what a caller might say, Rome "pre-screens" the info by selecting the best emails and faxes and reads them instead.

    5) Every second of the program is scripted -- John and Lance are especially guilty of not doing this. Those guys seem like they are just trying to fill awkward gaps of time for half the show. Nothing comes off as rehearsed and it is oftentimes scatterbrained conversation. Rome confidently goes through his agenda and makes smooth transitions.

thoughts? Is Houston sports radio that bad? Should they start taking lessons from the nationally sydicated gang? (rome, kornheiser, patrick, Ballou?)

Houston has good sports talk shows...Dallas has bad sports talk shows. Check out "The Ticket" in Dallas and you'll really appreciate what we have here!

Who wants a scripted sports talk show?? That would be boring. The point is to have insightful, spontaneous conversation.

Rome is one of a kind. He has some good takes, some bad too, but his show is always interesting. Plus he has some great interviewing skills. He can be annoying at times, especially when he won't let a subject drop, but overall I like his show.

As much as I enjoy "The Jungle", I'm gonna have to respectfully, yet 100% disagree with you on this one. Jim Rome kisses more a$$ than any other sports interviewer on the planet... especially considering that he "badmouths" many of the same guys with his "takes." Yes, all sports radio guys badmouth athletes, its part of the terrain... but Rome takes it to another level (which is part of the attraction to his show, he doesn't fear to speak his mind, WHEN ALONE!)

For instance, Albert Belle. Rome has criticized Belle for his personality, "corkgate," and media relations for many, many years... however, when interviewing Belle on his radio show, he couldn't have kissed more a$$!!!! He always portrays his interviewee as a victim of circumstance, or a hero... usually this is the same object of his scorn! For someone who tries to be edgy and off the wall, he sure does become "just another butt kissing interviewer" when faced head on with the same athletes who he talks EXTREMELY ill of...

i absolutely don't listen to Jim Rome its sports value, but rather as an entertainment outlet. To hear the "smack" and "takes" of the "clones" is pretty funny. Similarly, I don't listen to Tony Kornheiser for his sports analysis, b/c he doesn't ever seem to do any! I mean the guy seems to know very little about sports, considering he is in print, TV, and radio... but his personality and charisma comes off great in all three forums...

EDIT: for actual sports analysis, I have always liked Mel Kiper Jr. on ESPN radio and "Bob and Bruce" on TSN radio... guess that's why these guys are weekend radio personalities...

Ask Chris, errrrrr, I mean Jim Everett if Rome is a butt kisser in an interview. Did you see that show when Everett flipped the table up and charged Rome? One of the finer moments in sports talk history.

In general Rome does do a lot of butt kissing, but he does mix in tough questions, no doubt. Face it, no one would come back on his program if he just lambasted every interviewee. I think he mixes it up as much as one can in that forum.

sure i remember the infamous incident on "Talk 2" ESPN2... the thing is that he still uses that demeanor on "The Jungle," yet does a 180 when interviewing guests... Perhaps he has learned, from his ESPN days, to alter his interviewing skills... but the stark contrast b/t discussion sans athlete and interviews is just so great that it makes him come across as fake at times... I will give the fact that he is well prepared when interviewing athletes... probably one of the better radio guys in that regard...

    I. . . . . . cant. . . . . . . .stand listening. . . . . . . . to . . . .. . . . that . . . . . . . . . . Clown. . . . . . . . . Rome.

this here is what bothers me about Rome, his show would be about half the time if he wouldnt pause between every few words, he makes a 2 minute statement into a 5 minute one, and on top of that he wont quite or does not know when to stop on some topics, I just get angry when I listen to him.

Sports Talk is so dominated by adds that I need someone who gets in as much info in as little time as possible, Rome does not do that for me.

I like Rome's interviews. Athletes take enough pounding from the media without having to be on the defensive answering interview questions. Rome's interview come across as being relaxed, and loose and makes the interviewee feel at ease, thus they answer personal questions without the interview feeling like it's a reason to suck more information out of an athlete. I enjoy Rome to a degree. I'm not a real fan of him, but he's better then the alternatives right now. Phil Hendrie is still my favorite radio show though! :)

Rome and the Dan Patrick Show that follows are both good alternatives to the lame callers that call in to the Houston shows.

I don't like Rob Dibble but I've started to like the ESPN Dan Patrick show more and more...primarily because ESPN has the pull to get a wide variety of big name guests on his show.

Rome is able to keep the show flowing because they do a better job of screening their calls. 610 will pretty much put on any yahoo who calls just to hear his voice. These morons call all the time whining about the same things: Biggio/Bagwell...Yao Ming...the same tired crap over and over.

Its Arnie Spanier...dammit i forgot the song. one eight hundred sevensevensevenTWO nine oh seven! His sidekick was funny, but he sucks now. Domino? Something like that.

I forgot what thread it was, but somebody did a Rome impression that was on the spot. Its hilarious how he pauses, and sighs, and crumples a lot of paper.

Oh man, I loved that show! Rome's run buzzer has nothing on Arnie's puncout! That thing was so damn funny!

"Two hundred and some odd days until my New Yor Mets win the world series."

"BALLGAME OVER! mets win, THEEEEEEEEE, mets win. (cheapest voice over I ever heard)

Meet the Mets, ??? the Mets, step right up and greet the Mets."

A lot of this is still fuzzy to me. Its been so long since I heard his show. (We don't get him up here in Ok. anymore) What ever happened to Arnie? Is he doing local now or someting?

Man oh man, do I agree. The Ticket has got to be the worst in sports talk. I miss Houston the most for its sports talk. :(

... oh, and also for its non-generic non-bland food

Having been forced to listen to hour upon hour upon hour of The Jim Rome Show, for nearly three years (thanks so much, Elvis honey), I feel informed enough to say that Rome kisses approximately the same amount of ass during his interviews as Oprah. Which is to say, a lot. Sometimes I'm surprised he can keep talking around those big cocks in his mouth.

He's funny sometimes, though. The 'repeatedly playing clips of moronic people' thing often works.
