for some reason, he always be picked up during the mid season, he got picked up by heat during the mid season, played well, but nobody sign him till Kings picked him up last season. he is a good player, but no teams are crazy enough to sign him, weird

Yeah... I noticed that too. It always confused the hell out of me, because he's a damn fine player. Don't think the Kings/Wolves will be waiting until mideseason to sign him this year, though... not after the way he played with the Kings, especially against Kobe.

Supposedly, he's got the reputation of being a locker room cancer around the league. I believe it's from his stint in Dallas...don't know if it's true or not. He played very well though last year and seemed to provide some nice veteran presence and toughness to the Kings, and I think they were very happy with him.

After dealing Hedo, JJ became more valuable to the Kings. My understanding was that signing Jackson was the reason the Kings sent Keon to the Jazz for just picks...to clear some possible LTax $ that they could use on Jim Jackson.

If it was just reputation from Dallas the lucky team after that stop would have kept him. There has to be more too it why he consistenty wears out his welcome--it isn't like he has journeyman talent.

Gater, regarding your sig giving the status of Rice's contract, is it possible under the CBA to trade Rice to a team with cap room for a draft choice or choices? If so, wouldn't that free up money this year (which we could use) because next year the Rice savings are eaten up by pay increases for SF et al. We could then go after someone like Jim Jackson or V. Stepania.

Readers' Digest - Yes, an under the cap team could absorb Rice's contract and free up FA $ this year for Houston. To my knowledge, SA, Utah, Miami, LAC and maybe the Wiz were all able to do this before the summer signing season began.

But why would they do it? None of them covet Rice's production and they already have cap space now. Absorbing Rice means they postpone use of the space until next summer.

It's kind of like money - would you rather I gave you $100 now or $100 next summer? :)

The other possibility is send Rice to Team A (over the cap), who sends the equivalent contract value (but non-expiring) to Team B (under the cap). Either or both could send picks.

The trick in the scenario is 1) finding an under the cap team and 2) finding players on the 3rd party team (the over the cap team) that they want to part with but that the under the cap desires. Difficult at best. But I'm sure some dreamcaster will think of it between now and training camp! ;)

Newbie, you've obviously had too many jets fly too closely over your head -- like this post just did.

The Rockets need to find a way to free up cap room this year because the elimination of Rice's salary won't do squat for us next year. As a newbie, you wouldn't know that Gater, Aelliot and a few others have excellent insight into how to use the CBA salary cap to best advantage. Like the bulk of us on this board, read and learn.

I must tell you that CBA knowledgewise aelloitt (or NIKEstrad and even heypartner) are more well versed than I on the subject...but it is always flattering when the comparisons are made.

Also, I may have given you some erroneous info prior.

I think this coming 2003-04 is the first year of Steve Francis's max contract extention. (Someone please correct me if this not true but I believe that is why he is BYC this summer). If that is the case, even finding an under the cap team to take Rice wouldn't get the Rox under the salary cap. It will be the same thing next summer if the Rockets let Rice expire.

IMO, the Rockets fundamental problem is they have too many overpaid underachievers - primarily Rice, Taylor and Cato. Should Cato repeat last season, Mo start 2003 hot like he ended last season and Rice to stay healthy...those would be big positives. Then if AGriff and Pike are overachieving underpaid players, we could surprise some folks. Keep the faith!

And don't worry...I would never let a newbie steal a C Note from the Draft Day God. ;)

Easy there. I did understand the quote and agree that money now would be better than money later. I was just making a joke about Gater offering you $100.

I would not consider myself a newbie. I registered 8 days after you did. I have been viewing this board for over 3 years. I particpated in the chat room for most every game last year and I played in a clutchcity fantasy basketball league (won the regular season, 2nd place in playoffs) as well.

I can remember when you first started you would end everything with a thumbs up or thumbs down statement. You took quite a beating for that, but I thought you had some good insight and you handled it well.

Take care and keep the insight (and jokes) coming.

Eight days! Looks like I'll always have seniority. :D I apologize for my crankiness. Apparently it's a symptom of senior member-itis for some of us, especially after a week of hotels, airports and endless meetings.

I thought everybody had forgotten the thumb thing. It was fun at the time, but it was kind of dumb. I'm still probably on half the board's ignore list to this day, but, hey, thumbs down on those who can't take a joke.:)

It's cool. I figured it was something like that.

Their loss. I will continue to read your posts for both insight and humor. The two things I enjoy most about this board. Take care.
