Nuggets seeded low, but still dangerous
    By Jim Cleamons

Observations on the Western Conference playoffs:
    * The Western Conference isn't so easy to handicap this year. With Denver in particular playing so well late in the season - the Nuggets have the league's best record since the All-Star break - it wouldn't be surprising at all for the No. 6 or 7 seeds to pull off first-round upsets. As a basketball fan, you really got to like the parity in the conference this year. It's good for the league to have so many teams in there with 50, 55, 60 wins.
    * Dallas is playing better basketball because it's trying to put a better emphasis on defense. But have the Mavs truly made a commitment or is it just lip service? When teams get backed into a corner, they tend to revert to what they do best.
    * Seattle is getting healthy, with Rashard Lewis and Antonio Daniels back. However, without Vladimir Radmanovic still out, there are questions about the Sonics' size, as well as their outside shooting. They need other weapons to keep opposing defenses honest, or Ray Allen will have trouble. This is where the lack of a real inside threat may come to haunt them.
    * I just don't like Houston. Defensively, I don't think they can get the job done, and offensively, they don't score enough points. If they meet a good defensive team, they're going to struggle. They don't have a balanced enough attack to make it very far in the playoffs, especially if they face Sacramento. The Kings have absolutely no thought of playing defense.
    * It looks like Memphis is going to hold on to the No. 8 spot, and to be honest, the Grizzlies deserve it. They have been playing consistent basketball all year long. Then again, I don't think they'll offer much of a challenge to Phoenix, even with a fully roster healthy.
    * Speaking of Phoenix, it is really going to be interesting to see if the Suns can continue to play at the tempo to

which they've become accustomed this season. Historically, the pace of the game is slowed during the postseason. That's because teams realize just how valuable each possession is. But Phoenix is a team that's all speed. If they can, I think it's a foregone conclusion they will at least reach the conference finals, if not the NBA Finals.
    * I would expect San Antonio and Phoenix to be the two teams in the conference finals. That will be a fun series, because it truly will be a battle of differing philosophies, with San Antonio being perhaps the best defensive team in the half-court in the league. The thing that gives Phoenix an opportunity is that Tim Duncan is just now working his way back into the lineup. Of course, the Spurs know how to play with him on the floor but there is an adjustment period.
    * I don't see how anyone, however, can discount Denver. The Nuggets play emotional basketball. They believe in themselves. They believe destiny is on their side. They're on a roll.
As the NBA season comes to a close, I'd like to sincerely thank my readers in my first year with The Tribune. I enjoyed sharing my insight with you and hope that I helped you enjoy our great game. Utah is a great basketball state.

No wonder this guy's coaching for NO......After watching his beloved denver team get rocked last night, i think that the rockets have a good chance to make some noise in the playoffs regardless of who they play .

If anyone knows about failure its Cleamons. Just look at what a failure he was in Dallas and now in New Orleans.

Cleamons is to coaches what Pippen is to players. With out MJ, Pippen was a has been and with out Phil Jackson, Cleamons is not even sure the basketball is round.

Cleamons became an assistant with the Bulls the same year that Van Gundy did with the Knicks (1989) .... and they became head coaches the same year too (Cleamons with the Mavs and Van Gundy with the Knicks). No proof, but have to wonder if there is a little bitterness there from an old rivalry.

On the other hand, we are the sixth seed in the West right now .... no one has to like our chances.

I mean, what is he trying to say? He says if we meet a good defensive team we'll lose, then says we're not balanced enough, especially if we meet Sacramento, who plays zero defense.

SO this team is not good enough defensively, can't score, and has no balance. I mean we sound like we should have a record, say as bad as the NO Hornets?

Dude is just all over the place in his assesment.

Does he read this stuff after he writes it? There are so many things wrong with his analysis.

Rockets lead the Western Conference in Opponent FG%.

He points out our lack of balance, then says we would struggle against the Kings - who he admits is even less balanced.

He also says we won't make it very far, but then discusses a possibility against the Kings. As things stand now, I believe that could only happen in the Western Conference Finals. We would at least have to get out of the first round.

Oh yeah, Phoenix doesn't have a lack of balance do they? They give up the most points of any team in the league and are 6th in Opponent FG% among playoff teams in the West.

Writing for the Salt Lake Tribune, wouldn't his readers be more interested in his analysis of how many balls they'll get in the lottery and how many big name free agents won't sign with them this offseason?

Just by reading into the quote on the Rockets by Jim Clemons you can sense some hatred and a little jealousy. I think he really blew it when he threw in the Kings as a team the Rockets would have trouble with.

    5th seed Baby!!!!!!!

I just don't like Jim Cleamons

Defensively, he doesn't think they can get the job done, and offensively, he doesn't score enough points in bed. If he meets a good defensive team, he will ride on Phil Jackson's ass for more rings. He doesn't have a balanced enough attack to make it as coach, especially if he tried to write a trash article like this . He has absolutely no thought of EVER being a head coach again, in addition of being a columnist.

In Fairness, Houston doesn't have as many offensive weapons as Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas, Sacramento, or Denver. We have Yao and Tracy, after that, we depend on someone to step up. Other teams have consistent third options...

I don't care what Clemons says the Rox record speaks for itself. We have beaten four western conference playoff teams in the last 4 games, didn't go 2-2 or 3-1, 4 zip, the last one was a blowout against the hottest team in the league. The Rox are going to the WC final and I wouldn't ask Clemons advice for my fantasy league.

The consistent third option is whoever is left open because of our superstars (Wesley, James, Barry, Sura). Who was the consistent third option behind Shaq and Kobe? They made everybody better and so do Yao and Tracy. This team is anchored by defense and we play great team defense(best in NBA if field goal percentage against). We're gonna be in each game in the playoffs because of defense and if we execute down the stretch like we did against Memphis and the Sonics, we can beat anybody.
