from a speech yesterday, mr. forbes kerry, slams the troops:

"You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq."

basso, at this point in the game, you shouldn't even be allowed to type the letters "i r a q" on this BBS without a laugh track .wav in the background.

Sounds like good advice. I wouldn't encourage a young person to join our military today.

    Love Kerry's retort...

Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran and Bush's rival in 2004, fired back, saying the president and his administration are the ones who owe U.S. troops an apology because they "misled America into war and have given us a Katrina foreign policy that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it."

"This is the classic GOP playbook," Kerry said in a harshly worded statement. "I'm sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did. I'm not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium."

    i'm pretty sure mccain served...

[rquoter]McCain, Snow call on Kerry to apologize
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts, came under fire from Republicans including Sen. John McCain Tuesday for saying at a political rally that student's who do not take academics seriously get "stuck" in Iraq.

While speaking Monday at a campaign rally for California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides, Kerry said students who do not make an effort in school may end up in Iraq.

"You know our education, if you make the most of it, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well," Kerry said at the Angelides rally held at Pasadena City College. "If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

The Arizona senator called on Kerry, a fellow Vietnam veteran, to apologize for the comments as did White House spokesman Tony Snow and House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

"Senator Kerry owes an apology to the many thousands of Americans serving in Iraq, who answered their country's call because they are patriots and not because of any deficiencies in their education," McCain said in a statement released by his political action committee.

Prior to the McCain rebuke, Snow described Kerry's comments as "an absolute insult."

But Kerry defended himself saying his remarks were misinterpreted. And, specifically addressing Snow's criticisms, described them as "despicable Republican attacks."

"If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they're crazy," Kerry said in the statement. "This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I'm sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did."[/rquoter]

What he said was partly insulting but partly true. In today's society, many citizens go "fight for their country" only because they really can't do or won't do anything else. Once you get your high school diploma, that's it really. There are no second chances.

    more from Mccain:

[rquoter]Senator Kerry owes an apology to the many thousands of Americans serving in Iraq, who answered their country's call because they are patriots and not because of any deficiencies in their education. Americans from all backgrounds, well off and less fortunate, with high school diplomas and graduate degrees, take seriously their duty to our country, and risk their lives today to defend the rest of us in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. They all deserve our respect and deepest gratitude for their service. The suggestion that only the least educated Americans would agree to serve in the military and fight in Iraq, is an insult to every soldier serving in combat, and should deeply offend any American with an ounce of appreciation for what they suffer and risk so that the rest of us can sleep more comfortably at night. Without them, we wouldn't live in a country where people securely possess all their God-given rights, including the right to express insensitive, ill-considered and uninformed remarks.[/rquoter]

Would have been nice if he'd addressed exactly what it was he meant in that speech instead of reverting to "GOP smear machine" boilerplate (no matter how accurate).

American troops generally aren't known as the smartest troops around the world. Yes, they have the best equipment but they do lack in mental abilities. Recently the government lowered testing requirements for these soldiers in order to meet recruitment quotas. On top of this American soldiers are known to be ill disciplined, and not as committed as soldiers from Asian, African and Eastern European regions. When the sole purpose for American soldiers is monetary gain, you will start to understand the problem the American military faces.
