Interesting I read the Jets want A.Johnson, Johnson will most likely be a Texan. Who are the Jets targeting. My guess would be Suggs. ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/columnist?id=1544641 Friday, April 25, 2003 Jets give up two later picks for No. 4 By Len Pasquarelli ESPN.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW YORK -- Although a few details remain to be worked out, ESPN.com has learned the New York Jets and Chicago Bears agreed in principle Friday to a trade involving respective first-round draft choices. New York will move up to the fourth overall spot in the first round and, it is believed, surrendered its two choices later in the round, No. 13 and No. 22, to make the quantum leap up the board. It is not certain yet if Chicago gave up anything else in the deals. It is not secret the Bears have been shopping their first-round choice, but the team assumed most likely to land it was New England, which wanted to deal up for a shot at Kentucky defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson. There are no indications of who the Jets want to select at the No. 4 spot. The team has an aging defense and conventional wisdom was that New York would use the draft to bolster that unit. But the Jets also lost star receiver Laveranues Coles in free agency and could use the fourth overall pick to replace him. Coach Herm Edwards has hinted that the only two wide receivers he considered worthy of first-round status are Charles Rogers of Michigan State and Andre Johnson of Miami, both of whom are thought to be top five prospects. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Sure Dewayne Robertson is a badass, but this draft is the deepest draft I've ever seen at the D-Line. Personally I think that William Joseph will be just as good, if not better than Robertson, and the Jets could've had him at #13, and maybe pickup a Taylor Jacobs or Kelly Washington at #22. Look at the DTs in this class: Dewayne Robertson (Kentucky) Jimmy Kennedy (Penn St.) William Joseph (Miami) Kevin Williams (Ok. St.) Ty Warren (TX A&M) Jonathan Sullivan (UGA) not to mention the DE's Terrell Suggs (ASU) Jerome McDougle (Miami) Chris Kelsey (Neb) Michael Hayes (Penn St.) Cory Redding (Tex) Kenny Peterson (Ohio St.) Calvin Pace (WFU) This is definitely the year of the D-line.
I am thinking you are really a smart guy. Only intelligent people could come to such a conclusion (see post 3 prior) That is really the only thing that makes sense. If not then why wouldn't they pay less and get a pick say at 6 or later. The gal are looking to go CB and they may have just gotten screwed, that makes my day.
More than likely they are looking at CB. It's possible perhaps that they'd also like Andre Johnson, hoping that the Texans will move down in the first, with the new owner of the 3rd pick taking someone other than Johnson.
I can promise you that should the Texans trade down and Johnson OR Rogers fall past 3 they will be IMMEDIATELY scooped up by the Jets to go along side Pennington.
I think they may be targetting a DT they view as studly. Their D-line sucked ass last year, esp against the run.
I think Robertson would be a nice fit. They lost Noble, right? (Not a Cowboys fan, just a HUGE FAN of draft day.)
Damn it, I forgot to say that in addition to Newman, the Jets are in love with the D lineman out of Kentucky Dewayne Robertson, but I have never heard anyone rate him above Suggs, so that is why I felt it may be Newman, but they apparently they really think Robertson is the real deal. Here are a couple of interesting reads on ESPN. I have a feeling that the draft tomorrow will be entertaining. I think that the Jets move to #4 could mean the Texans are staying put. Johnson or Rogers will not last past 4 now. If Detroit makes a move then the Texans can get Rogers at 3. If the Texans make a move and Detroit doesn't then they are not assured of Johnson after 4. And according to one of the articles, the talent pool is lacking and teams will end up paying high 1st round contracts for second round talent. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/columnist?id=1544350 http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/columnist?id=1544016 http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/columnist?id=1544514
1) Jets have sucky corners (the Texans took their good ones). 2) Jets lost their returner to the Redskins via a court ruling. 3) Jets picked up Curtis Conway, who should fill in admirably for the departed Coles (assuming he stays healthy). Add it all up and it spells T-e-r-e-n-c-e--N-e-w-m-a-n. There's NO chance now that we can trade down and still get Andre Johnson. A pity, I tell you.
That was my initial reaction too, however consider the following: The jets run the TB cover-2 defense, which doesn't emphasize man-to-man "shutdown" corners like Newman. Instead, it prefers physical corners who can play zone and run support. That is one of the reasons why they were willing to let Aaron Glenn get away last year. And Newman is a 5-10 man to man corner. Now, I'm not saying that they won't take him, but it would seem to go against the grain; however, maybe they reall y like him that much.
