Please pick him up NOW! via twitter: Manish Mehta http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/36750413/ns/sports-player_news/
This has been discussed a bit in the draft thread too. I say, why not? He isn't getting any younger and he has some pass protection issues but he still a good run blocker. I'm sure he had something to do with the Jets leading the league in rushing last year.
Not the same player he was once was but he isn't any worse than Kasey Studdard. I am sure that some team not the Texans will overpay for him because of his name.
McClain_on_NFL I magine the Texans will show interest in G Alan Faneca after the Jets cut him. He's from Houston. He's 33. I bet he'd like to play at home Maybe McClain can actually get this one right???
I can't see any reason that the Texans don't go after him. We can only hope he wants to come here and the money is right.
Have any of the players who had threads pop up hoping the Texans sign them actually turned out to be good pickups?
this guy would be a good free agent signing which leads me to believe the Texans will have zero interest
It's fair to say the Texans will probably not get him (after all, odds are at least 31:1), but to assume you know who the Texans actually pursue in free agency, or the teams they contact about trades, and how vigorous those efforts are, is just bull-puckey. Don't be a REEKO.
It is hard to say that a 33 year old offensive lineman is sure to be a good free agent signing. Obviously the Jets believe that he is worth letting go.
http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5132584 NEW YORK -- Two years, $20 million. For a guard. Wow. That was the final bill for Alan Faneca, who was officially released on Saturday by the New York Jets. The news came as no surprise, as the Jets had been trying to trade Faneca for several weeks. They found no team willing to pay his $7.5 million salary for 2010 and, when they drafted former UMass lineman Vladimir Ducasse on Friday night in the second round, Faneca's release became a formality. Faneca made two Pro Bowls for the Jets, but they ended up paying him an exorbitant amount of money. In 2008, Faneca was the centerpiece of a blockbuster free-agent class, signing a five-year, $40 million contract that included $20 million in guaranteed money. The Jets were a little concerned about his age (he's 33 now), but they felt they could get at least three productive seasons out of him. They got two, although they felt his play had diminished. Faneca allowed 6½ sacks last season, according to STATS -- an unusually high number for an interior lineman. But he still was effective as a run-blocker and was considered a team leader, instrumental in the development of linemates D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold. The Jets are taking a risk, messing with the chemistry on one of the best lines in the league. But the deed is done.
Some of you act like it is a crime to doubt the Texans front office. It's okay to question their moves, as of yet, they have not accomplished anything. Condoning every single one of their actions as smart is as dumb as dismissing all their actions the texans might have the worst pair of starting guards in the NFL, anyone who started on a playoff team last season and made the pro-bowl would be an improvement
So if Kris Brown makes a couple of field goals last year (playoffs baby! is that the only accomplishment we can count?), all the sudden the front office can be trusted? I don't get why people keep confusing X's and O's, clock management, or play calling with free agency and the draft. These things are not inter-related, and using failure or success in one to compliment or criticize the other is fail.
I have never ONCE seen you question anything the front office has done. And if they are as great as you make them out to be, yes, they would have made the playoffs by now. The best front offices make the playoffs and have success. Teams that have little success on the field rarely have a strong front office.
In terms of FA/Draft, the Texans have not given me much reason to question them. I have a few minor gripes, but on the whole I've been happy with their moves, and I'm not going to *assume* things I don't know just so I can complain. That is what kills me about you really, you make major assumptions in your criticisms. If you're going to criticize, at least stay on solid ground. You want to criticize them for not franchising Dunta? You want to say they overpaid for Antonio Smith? Those are valid criticisms, and while they're questions that have yet to be settled and completely up for debate, and I'm not going to raise issue with them.
the Texans have one of the more talented rosters in the NFL. They should have made the playoffs last year. The front office has done a good job getting talent.
I don't really care about the sacks he gave up. If we run better, then we can use playaction more anyway to offset his lack of pass protection. The Texans are also simply better at scheming passes than the Jets. Our biggest weakness is inability to get a push off the line of scrimmage. And Faneca can help with that.
