Can somebody give me some evidence for this? I have a friend that has never heard about this before. Thanks.
There are some statements in the New Testament that favor it being another time in the year (although not specified), rather than December. I'd check the link below. I dont' have time to look through it right now, but will do so later. If it doesn't have the information, I'll try to find it for you later. http://biblicalstudies.info/christmas.htm
My grandfather once told me that Jesus was supposedly born in early-mid January (I can't remember if he said ~6th?). Christmas is when we celebrate our real God, materialism, lol. This country is funny, do we have one "religious" holiday that isn't celebrated by the acquisition of stuff. Ahhh... whatever, works for me.
Most theologians agree that Jesus' actual birthday was sometime in the summer to early fall. Some have suggested September 10th as a possible day while others point to June. The actual Christmas holiday was originated by the church in Europe during a period of time when pagan holidays like the Winter Solstice were celebrated as the primary holidays. As a result, the Christian church set holidays like Christmas to undermine Winter Solstice, Easter to overrule the spring fertility rites (the resurrection, most believe, was in late summer) and others like All Hallow's Eve to take the place of Samhain (now we call it Halloween), the most sacred day of the year in pagan and Wiccan practices. As Christianity was spread throughout Europe and "officially" adopted by many of the empires of the time (Roman, British, etc), their holidays overshadowed the Wiccan and Pagan holidays as they had hoped.
I think I heard the other day that the story went like this: Mary was walking with Joseph in the dessert when she suddenly felt pains and decided to sit under a date tree. She felt hungry and she ate the dates that fell. She saw a manger and went there and had Jesus. Ok, so that was a summarized version but I didn't leave out the main points. Now seeing as she was sitting under a DATE tree, and eating DATES, if it is seen by a historical perspective, Dates in the mid-east fall and grow during the Date season, which is June-July. Therefore, Jesus was born somewhere in the late summer to early fall.
So let me get this straight. Mary was stomping through, what?, a field of tiramisu? or maybe stomping some sponge cake? And then she gave birth to the son of God? Man, it has been awhile since I've been to church. That's the cool thing about the Bible...you can pick up all sorts of new tidbits every time you read it! (A smart-ass's )
Me and JC were chatting on Saturday and he said , "Yo Mateo, dont forget my birthday. Its on.." and then the damn cell phone died. You'd think Sprint would put a cell phone tower in Heaven already.
