Yup... You heard right. I dealt with this crap back in November. Asked DPS what I had to do to clear EVERYTHING up. They told me what to do, and I did every bit of it. Anyway, I get a call this week from a policeman saying they had my brother's car and it was going to be towed if I didn't pick it up. So I went over to get it. He runs my license and, what do you know? F***ing DPS has suspended it again. Again, no mail or anything. This is absolutely ridiculous. I don't know who put this legislation together, but it has to be the biggest case of a money-grab I have ever seen. Luckily, I was able to find out about the fine and pay it, but this is absolutely ridiculous. If y'all recall, I had to deal with $1,700 in charges and two days in jail because of this crap beforehand. BTW, these surcharges are for driving with an expired drivers license back in 2004. Just an FYI, if you've been pulled over for driving without insurance, or driving with an expired license, or a couple of other violations, you will get your license suspended now. Utterly the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.
NYC = nation's ****hole. this is basically what the entire city looks like yes... their buildings are still in black and white, it's that bad.
Really, with all these sheets of paper and forms to fill out and rule changes without notification and impounds and obfuscations and so on and so on, it's futile to think that most non-moving violations have anything to do with safety. It's all about collecting revenue. That's why these laws usually don't make sense, why they're always such a hassle - they're designed to be. They are there to generate revenue for the city. The municipal government knows that this bureaucratic snafu is their cash cow, and they're milking everyone. Do you think the judge, the prosecutor, and all the people there don't realize that this is where their paycheck comes from? The municipal government is not there as a sentinel keeping the streets safe, they're there as the bully stealing your lunch money. Texas has no state tax....right.
what does this have to do with fatty getting his license suspended? Public transportation is great. If there is a real committment to it by the city. Nyc? so what, people mind their own business and don't have to drive their 35 gallon Tahoe's everywhere, whats wrong with that? black and white? when is the last time you were in ny?
No kidding. I asked them why my mail was showing up on their screen as returned, especially when any other piece of mail I get is sent there. They gave me the excuse that "their" mail is sensitive and that some mailmen don't want to take the responsibility of sending it at all if it shows that you have two addresses, so they'll just return it. (biggest BS story I've ever heard) I asked why there was no second attempt to send it, or a phone call. They said that wasn't their resposibility. I asked if I could do automatic bill pay. They said they didn't have the capabilities. I asked when my next due date would be, so I could put it in my calendar. They said that information was not available. The ONLY way to get this completely cleared was to pay the ENTIRE three year amount up front. They WILL do that. Worked out to be $320 total. Just unbelieveable.
Oh, and BTW, even though this has been paid in full, it will take Two Weeks for it to come off my record. So if I'm pulled over in the next two weeks, off to jail I go.
If you have unpaid tickets when your license expires they make you pay those first b4 you can renew your license. When i wanted to renew mine i had to pay off 3 warrants first.
Exactly. I was procrastinating. However, I can't see how anyone can justify what I've gone through due to this.
I didn't know about this. I haven't had a warrant in years. However, I would have a lot less of a problem with them issuing a statewide warrant if a surcharge was not paid. But to suspend your license, which is a Class "B" misdemeanor (same as a DWI), and throwing you in County Jail for $28.50 is inexcuseable for the Legislatures to authorize. Oh, BTW, the fine that County gave me for not paying $28.50? $600. This is a money-grab. Pure and simple.
Not trying to be an ass or anything, but actually, that's the way it should be. I remember your story from your initial post. If you get pulled over time and time again for traffic infractions, and you're going to 'forget' about insurance and tickets and court dates and whatnot, you should expect to deal with crap like this for years to come. It all boils down to personal responsibility.
The incompetence of DPS is legendary, to be sure. But if you'd just paid your tickets on time, you'd have no problems today.
