Obviously, the ability to defend is the reason Beverley start. And Beverley shows he can shoot too...and that makes the decision to start him that much easier. Now if Beverley is an average defender, do you think he will start? Nope. If he shoot average or terrible, do you think he will start? Nope. So because Beverley can do all of these things even though offensively Lin is better, IT IS enough to start Beverley. Lin will never be a great defender...either you have it or you don't. He is constantly getting exploit at pick n roll by the great PGs in this league and that hurt the Rockets. And as much as he help out in offense, he also allows other team to score on him easier. This is the reason why McHale chose to start Beverley. By starting Beverley, it gives you a better chance of winning because there is absolutely no weakness in ANY of the starter position. They can't exploit the interior because Howard and Asik is too dominant inside and they can't exploit Beverley like they do w/ Lin and Parson is a great defender...hard to crack him also. So, starting Beverley ensure a easy game overall.

It also makes sense to have Lin come off the bench to generate any type of offense for the 2nd unit. None of the players can create their own shots and Beverley coming off the bench isn't going to help much. Everything just seem to make much more sense w/ Beverley starting. Now i am not saying start Lin would have lead to easy wins. It's more risky wins because of his defense liability.

It would also be better if he doesn't play a lot with Asik because Lin improves when he plays with a center who can finish.

At this point, who cares who starts. We are still building chemistry and trying out different combinations. We are evolving as a team and offense. McHale will change starters depending on matchups (and availability) IMO. Let's just win. And Lin will be an important factor in getting those wins, starter or 6th man.

Winning is good for both LOF/LOH. Let's shelve all the divisiveness and let's cheer for everyone's success. Rockets to a man are a team, CF needs to be one as well. Dialog is good, diatribes, not so much.

    just stop -

the only time lin went up against rose, he made rose take 26 shots to get 29 pts. he went 8 for 26. i would say he guarded him pretty well, making him take inefficient shots. and really, no one can guard these guys one-on-one. you give anybody in the nba 26 shots and they'll have decent numbers.

and lilliard? smh. did you watch any games last year? and lilliard can't guard lin, either.

One things for sure, the starting point guard for the other team will not have to exert much energy on defense.

Can't believe that because of Beverly totally incompetence in playmaking cost Lin the starting position.

Step it up Bev, instead of just relying on your overrated defence.

He better be prepared to box out Beverley for those rebounds, though.

It's not the point guard's job to rebound. He's going to let Beverley crash the boards. Most of the time, when Beverley doesn't get it, he's going to get a quick outlet with Beverley trailing way behind. Then someone on the team is going to have to pick up a quick foul because Beverley can't help himself.

I told all of you repeatedly that mchale and the coaching staff made this decision a long time ago. Mchale's rhetoric of having 2 starting pg's was completely disingenuous and a political smokescreen.

The opposing team's starting PG is also bound to start the game off frustrated.

You can argue if Bev is a better defender than Lin...but he's definitely more of a pest and a nuisance. He's like that old guy at the gym that is always always in your space and it just annoys the hell out of you.

Lin will be relegated to 3rd/4th option and secondary player maker even if he is in the starting lineup, so the opposing PGs don't have a lot of work to do on defense anyways.

Nice theory but that's not how it is. From what I've seen getting back on D hasn't been an issue for Beverley even when he crashes boards.

One thing. There are no 1st or 2nd teams. Minutes will overlap all over the place.

he can't get it back. he never "lost" it. if he wants the starter position back, it's up to mchale, not up to his play on the court. he never played bad enough to lose it.. both lin and bev played well in preseason. if they realize they need another playmaker in the 1st squad, then he'll have it back.

it was never a battle, and no one ever said it was. we'll see how he does as a 6th man. he always seems to do better as an underdog anyway.

not sure if this is a shout out to harden, howard, and parsons... or a jab at beverley?

in any case, beverley is the much better offensive weapon at this point in him & lin's careers.

beverley's tear drop & 3 pointer has looked NICE this preseason.

lin cannot touch that with a 10 ft. pole.

Dang, everybody here is so dramatic. Give it 10-20 games before you get your panties in a bunch.

I like Lin - but stop. Beverly is good, actually he is real good. He gets into opposing players heads, he hits his open shots and doesn`t do many mistakes. Yeah I consider Lin the better play, but not by much. This is not about Beverlys "incompetence" - it is about fitting the right players together. We have two very good PGs and we want to play them the way both can contribute their strengths and hide their weaknesses.

Lin will play the more important role - he will be the number 1 option of offense for long stretches of the game. Beverly will always be the number 3 option at best, at times probably the 5th option. But Beverly could help the starters more to set the tone and play good perimeter defense (while also grabbing an absurd amount of rebounds).

So stop pretending Lin is a victim - he is not. He is a great player that can play to his strengths as a 6th man.

Will this board go to flames whenever Bev has a bad game now? Please don't let that happen.
