I also think of Byrd when I think of Jasper.

    Good riddance.

My grandparents live there, whenever i tell someone where i'm going for the holidays, smartass comments ensue.

Small towns like that are forever doomed to that rep if a notable event happens there.

Waco isn't even that small, but if you ask most people outside Texas it too is only known for one event.

And as for that garbage, good riddance. You don't see the anti-death penalty guys speaking loudly on this one.

I haven't followed this case closely enough to comment on this guys guilt or innocence but I am against the death penalty even in this case.

While this was a truly heinous and despicable crime my opposition is based on the inherent imperfections of the US justice system and that would apply to this case also.

My gripe is how long it took to put him to death. And, his buddy is still in the appeals process. I mean...thirteen years after for an open-and-shut case basically? That's too much time to let trash like this live after that horrible murder.

Wait, what? A white guy is getting executed.......where are the protests?

    ;)

Glad this guy is getting his due, should have shot him years ago, a bullet would have been cheaper.

Should of let him walk through the "hood" wearing a white "hood"...That would have been fair ....If he makes it through the night he gets life in prison, if he dies, then call it justice!!!... Tell me that aint fair???

If that event never happened... Jasper would still be known for that kind of stuff. Trust me.

What is Killeen known for? Answer: Luby's cafeteria massacre.

That is one I had actually forgotten but this thread made me look it up.

I agree. As long as we allow our government to extract vengeance by killing the Lawrence Brewers of the world, it's going to kill the Troy Davises of the world, too.

I remember my brother-in-law (who is black) moved to Houston from Boston shortly before Rita and decided to evacuate for the hurricane despite my advice to stay put. He went in the dumbest direction for an evacuation -- north-east to the dirty side of the hurricane. And, of course the traffic was horrible and he couldn't get very far and ended up hunkering down in a small town and had the hurricane basically pass right over him anyway since it hit east of Houston. When I finally got him on the phone, I asked him where he was and he says, "Jasper." Being from Boston, he had no idea why Jasper was infamous. The whole Rita fiasco was just a big sequence of bone-head moves for him.

But, he said the people of Jasper were very nice to him. He stayed at a school for a while until someone offered space in their house. No one even tried to chain him to a pickup truck. It's a shame for those people who extended him such hospitality that they have to live with this reputation.

Isn't Killeen close to Fort Hood? That's what I thought of when I read your post. I remember something about the Luby's incident but not much. Wiki here I come.
