Ex-Sooners' QB says knees won't let him play

    Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Heisman Trophy winner Jason White announced Thursday that he is ending his professional career.

White, who had been competing to be the third quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, said he has the head and heart to play in the NFL but not the knees.

"It's always been a dream of mine, but certain things won't allow me to chase that dream," White said. "It's kind of out of my hands at this point."

White won the Heisman in 2003 and led Oklahoma to back-to-back BCS title games. He is Oklahoma's all-time passing leader with 7,922 yards and touchdown passes with 81.

He joined the Titans in May as an undrafted rookie after an audition with the Kansas City Chiefs did not lead to a contract offer.

White said he was still feeling the effects of reconstructive surgery on both knees while in college.

"I always had trouble, even in the summer, dropping back when practice wasn't every day," he said. "Now that practice was every day it got to the point where one of my knees was super sore so I started favoring it with the other one. Then the other one started hurting. I took a couple of days off this week and it hasn't really changed.

He said he informed coach Jeff Fisher of his decision Wednesday night.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops found out about White's retirement following the Sooners' morning practice on Thursday.

"Jason knows what's best for him," Stoops said. "If that's what he has to do, he's had an incredible career here."

"I'm sure possibly all the extra work probably could be bothersome to him health-wise and he just decided he wants to move on. Good for him. He'll have a successful career in whatever he does."

Stoops suggested White, who earned a degree in sociology, could pursue coaching.

"If he wanted to, he'd be a great coach," Stoops said.

That's a shame for someone to dream about playing in the NFL all of his life and to get so close only to not even have a chance to get it started.

I still think, even at 100%, White would have never been more than the next Chris Weinke, but it's a shame nonetheless.

Are you kidding me. Homey is going to move back to Norman, buy a car dealership, and sell pickup trucks to each and every inbred Sooner b*stard within a 100 mile radius!

12 years of college will do that to your knees.

Selling cars might be a little too easy for him. I always thought that his true calling was becoming a male model. Jason White is a beautiful man.

Supposedly Timmy Chang, or whatever his name is, From Hawaii, will move into third string. He's a little erratic, and his numbers came from a system, but he's a decent qb on the whole. Much better than White could ever be.

There's a reason why Jason White didn't get drafted. I guess he just made a bunch of NFL scouting departments feel smart.

That is so true. :D All the ex-ball players that didn't make it are selling cars in Norman. I expect more from Jason though. He's a class act. Those who say he wouldn't have made it, even with good knees, need to think back to his debut as a Sooner. :p

btw, I think you longhorn fans should maybe show some respect considering this man with no knees wiped the floor with you every year.

He retired? Don't you actually have to MAKE the NFL to retire?
