Jason Kidd to the Blazers http://cbs.sportsline.com/nba/story/7681034 The New Jersey Nets are talking to the Portland Trail Blazers about a trade that would include sending Jason Kidd to the Blazers for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, SportsLine.com has learned.
so that would leave the blazers with 3 pgs? kidd, NVE and telfair odd if you ask me and makes that pick of telfair look stupider and stupider
You would think even with Kidds huge contract they could get a better player than Shareef Abdur-Rahim
wow...talk about a team without a leader when SAR and Richard Jefferson are on a team together and Kidd leaves
That has to be the explanation. The way the Nets have been making business decisions, this makes perfect sense. Dump salary while picking up a young talent with local ties.
This may finally answer the question of is Richard Jefferson is simply a by-product of a Jason Kidd-run offense.
Anyone else much more afraid of Portland if this trade goes down? Then you gotta wonder what "Mighty Mouse" is worth on the block these days...
It would make me ponder if we have one of the worst backcourts in the west, assuming Tmac is playin SF.
The Nets are in trouble. To me it makes sense to 'blow it up' and trade away Kidd. Without Martin that team will just be mediocre. They got 3 1st rounders from Denver, why not use those, plus their own 1st rounders and cap room to rebuild. If they can lop off Kidd's salary from the team they will have some serious cap room very soon. If the Nets got back SAR and Telfair it would make sense, especially since SAR comes off the cap after this season. Stoudamire comes off the cap as well I believe. You would think on the Blazers that Kidd would be a big help to players such as Miles and Randolph...guys that can run the floor like Martin and Jefferson.
I don't think the majority of people realize how bad Kidd's knee is, or how much of a death-row-sentence his contract is. He didn't have a routine scope; he had major microfracture knee surgery. His knee had essentially turned to mush. See: Houston, Allan. If I were Rob Thorn, and a team would be willing to take Kidd sight unseen, and be offering a decent player on a short term contract, I wouldn't hesitate. Evan
OK, what are the two teams' 'demands' from the other? Somehow I do not foresee a straight up SAR/Kidd deal going down.
It would be tricky, but that's why fewer and fewer straight up deals happen these days. -->Telfair would be attractive to the Nets, especially if they're dealing Kidd. However, the Adidas (based in Portland) - Telfair conspiracy theory (hard to deny after the draft and his 15 million deal), makes me wonder if he is even allowed to be included in trade talks. -->I have a tough time seeing Stoudamire ($16 mill), NVE ($12 mill), and Kidd ($15 mill) all on the same roster, regardless of Telfair or the fact that NVE (team option for 05/06) and Damon are both in their last years. 3 guys at the same position filling the salary cap by themselves? If I'm correct, they would have 3 of the top 4 contracts for PGs (Stephon Marbury is #3). -->NJN have no other max-level contracts with which to take on NVE or Damon. The number two-sized contract on their current roster is Zo at $5 mill, and almost everyone else makes $2 or less. They'd have to package together virtually their entire roster. If I'm correct, Blazers managment is starting to sweat the Reef situation a bit. Reef and his agent have repeatedly gone public that he won't report for camp and will sit out. Now, the Blazers have suggested that they'll just dock his entire salary if need be, but no one wants that. Bringing in a guy like Kidd would instantly help them out in the area they're hurting the worst: fan relations. The city has nearly reached the point of open boycott with this team. They're sick of the cut-the-check Jailblazers, and Zach hasn't helped matters any. Kidd would, and their playoff chances triple if he can suit up for 82 (though I'd wager he makes no more than 50 or 60 next year). Evan
I agree, I feel the same way. Seems like all players that have had microfracture knee surgery haven't come CLOSE to their former self after it. A lot of Kidd's game is dependant on the fast break and speed. That will SERIOUSLY be curtailed after the proceedure. Kidd in the half court isnt the same as Kidd on the fast break.
No not afraid of Portland, but with Kidd they are a playoff threat. The guy can distribute the ball and the Blazers have some players. For Portland he gives them a shot to make the playoffs (don't see them making it otherwise) and some PR--given Allen's wallet it would not surprise me at all despite injury/age/contract expense concerns. It sucks because it would make another WC team better. The Nets have not done us any favors.
I don't understand this trade. The Blazers should start to re-tool their team for a title run, however that title run isn't going to happen until a few years down the line. It's quite obvious Kidd doesn't have that many great years left in him, why even trade for Kidd when you probably could find another solid, YOUNGER player to help build your team for a run 3 to 4 years down the road? If you look at what some of the up and coming west teams did this off-season you'd see MOST went after the younger players. Now you've got Phoenix, Utah, Houston, LA and Denver with teams that are really coming on strong, where does that leave Portland? An older PG leading a younger team. Well that's all good if you actually plan on making a title run this year, but not really good if you plan on building a title contender in a few years. What they SHOULD do is trade SAR for young talent that may not be the missing link today, but will actually help them in their quest when it seems more logical.
