This is exactly why I haven't purchased a PS3 yet. There just isn't a good enough selection of titles now. I'm waiting for the essentials: MGS4, Resident Evil, DMC4, FFXIII...

I think they'll do fine once they have a better library of games and developers begin to better utilize the system's capabilities. They just better not fall too far behind. I still think it's going to be the best system.

Buying a game machine and a couple games shouldn't cost 700+ dollars. Duh.

Sony was so cocky in the interviews I read about them competing against Xbox 360 and Wii that I think they deserve this.

The price is way too high. It's just that simple. My son is getting a Wii for his birthday this summer. He'll get a PS3 maybe by Christmas 2008 if the price drops. It's conceivable he will get an Xbox 360 in 08 if the PS3's price stays up and new games aren't compelling enough. It would almost take the earth to start spinning the other way for me to buy anything Microsoft besides a PC.

If I go that far, out of spite and anger I'll never buy anything Sony again.

The price is high to you because of the way you are looking at it. And you want it for your son? Its not really a kids machine. Considering its capabilities like bluray, built in wireless conectivity, free online, large HD, and the possibilities of Linux, using it as a DVR, etc... Then yes; the price is more than fair. Dramatically cheap actually. And all in one box! Just depends on how you look at it. If the general public simply wants its game machine to do only gaming then ya, it will stuggle. But dont say its expensive. If you only want to utilize it for gaming then thats on you...

why, because it has better graphics? its still a video game. I stopped buying video games years ago and because this is the latest thing its not gonna make me start buying. I just don't play them anymore and I would guess that just because this ist the latest thing it isn't gonna bring adults back into the market who don't play video games anymore.

what's not for kids it the price.

edit: I understand it has all those other capabilities but its still eventually a game console and that's how it is marketed. maybe if they marketed the other possibilities it would have a chance.

Isnt that why its called a video game console? I mean if they wanted to market it as a DVD player, they would. But, they dont. Online play is great, at least xbox live, but since when did these video game consoles become something other than that? Yea, its nice to see these new things being incorporated, but I dont see how you can blame people for complaining about the prices.

Its not for kids becasue the typical kid (under 13?) doesnt know how to setup wireless networks, install linux after burning it to a CD and creating a boot file, setup an online account with credit card, format an external HD to fat32, format storage devices to display photos, videos, game data, and music properly, pair bluetooth devices, create a file server on their PS3, convert media formats to display on the PS3, ETC... The damn xbox360 costs more when you add on the neccisary accessories (not that I am bashing it).

It's ahead of it's time. Once HD becomes more and more common among US households people's standards for gaming devices will change as well.

Microsoft knows this. That's why they are working on version 2 of the 360. Which will no doubt create a big PR mess for people who already have a device.

At the end of they day though, their games use the DVD drive and the ps3 software will have full advantage of blu ray discs.

It's the same as when the Playstation came out with a dvd drive and the 64 was still using cartridges. Yes, there were great games out with the smaller storage gaming device but there were many games for the playstation that just could not be made on the 64.

Hate all you want but once March comes and the next wave of software is released, the ps3 will go nowhere but up.

Sony markets it as computer or media center device. And yes some people just want it for gaming. And like I said, thats on them. The PS3 isnt what they are looking for. And yes that may be its downfall. But the price really is justifiable. Hell they are the only manufacturer losing money per unit. Its like buying a super computer and just using it as a calculator and then b****ing about the price.

I edited my last post to address this. this isn't how the machine is marketed, if sony wants to put all that on their machines, they need to market it as a replacement for the computer.

It doesn't, it costs almost $800 after taxes. Not to mention the money you'd have to shell outr for an HDTV if you didn't already have one to enjoy the full Sony experience.

Exactly For 800 bucks you can by a duo core domputer and do all those things too. And casual gamer would be happy with the pc game selctions. Hardcore gamers might not need all the other fluffys.

I don't buy into Sony's 'but it's a computer!' BS. They wanted people to believe the same thing about the PS2.

It's a freakin' video game console.

You're shutting out people who just want to play video games, you're shutting out people who don't want to pay that much for a console, you're shutting out people who don't think a Playstation will replace their computer, you're shutting out people who don't want to bother with all the extra crap.

That doesn't leave you too many people left.

PS3's holiday sales weren't that far behind so they are far from 'DOOMED' IMO. The games will more than help them make up the ground in time, I believe.

But it's going to be the games. Not the 'Entertainment Center! Computer!' talk.

DING! We have a winner. I understand the price of video game consoles keeps increasing, but to jump from ~$200 at release for the PS2 to ~$600+ for the PS3 is absurd.

Technically, the point that Pidgeon was making is that Sony needs more 1st party games. The games you listed are 3rd party. Assuming they were exclusive, I'm assuming they'd have the same affect as 1st party games (which help show off the system). Since 1 of those games isn't exclusive and at least another 2 are rumored to be headed to the 360, I guess that kind of proved Pidgeon's points (though if they stay PS3-exclusive, they could have the same impact).

Sony's been really quiet when it comes to their games. I haven't really seen much of Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Afrika, Naughty Dog's game, The Getaway, R&C, 8 Days, Hot Shots, Killzone PS3, etc., in a long time. And some games are still unannounced, such as Team Ico's next project, anything by Sony Liverpool (guys who made Wipeout...though they're also making F1), any PS3 games by Zipper (guys who make the SOCOM games), any projects from Sony Santa Monica (God of War team...probably busy finishing up GOW2, although some people should be free), and more (haven't seen MLB 07 from 989). There are some smaller games, such as Heavy Rain and Wardevil, which also have been in the shadows (probably because they're vaporware...unless Sony made a deal with them...can't remember if they did or not). I think they have 100 or so games being worked on by 1st party studios, but only a few have really been shown (and out of those, we don't know much about most of them).

Games by EA, Activision, Ubisoft, etc., won't really help sell the PS3 (they'll probably do the opposite actually).

    EA has some good games....

Fight Night Round 3 (I'll pick it up once there's a sale for $20 off or something) and Need for Speed: Carbon ($39 sale at target a couple of weeks ago).

Yes their ports, but at the moment there are no other games Im interested in thats released.

Picked up a couple of blu ray movies today. I swore I would never purchase a BD, but when it's $24.99 buy 1 get 1 free (Best Buy till the end of the week), well I couldn't pass up a good deal. One of the movies is a movie I've been eyeballing a long time (House of Flying Daggers) so I hope it's worth my $12 fiddy.
