At my job we get paid on the 1st and 15th. If one of these days happens to fall on a Saturday we would get paid that Friday. If one of these days happens to fall on a Sunday we would get paid on Monday. I used to get issued a pay check on pay day and go to the bank that afternoon and get cash in my hand. Recently we transferred to a direct deposit system. If payday falls on Mon-Thurs my check is usually deposited into my bank account when I wake up the following business day. Every once in a while, the deposit is made late and doesnt go in until the following business day. I really have no problem with that. However a handful of instances have already occurred when payday happens to fall on Friday and the deposit is not made in time, I will not receive my deposit until Monday at midnight. I will go all weekend having to watch my spending in my checking account without dipping into my savings or being over drafted. Last Friday I was my payday. 15 minutes before our office was to close, the payroll dept. issued an email to everyone saying that Monday was the MLK holiday and therefore we would not receive our 'direct deposit' until Tues. at midnight. They then promptly locked up their offices and left for the day before anyone could question them. To me this reeked of something fishy. Im starting to wonder if this is kosher what they are doing. I used to be able to walk out of my office on Friday and go to the bank and get cash in hand. In this instance I have to wait Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday before I see any cash. Thats five days! Almost a full week before I actually see my paycheck!
Just out of curiousity what sort of company do you work for and how is business doing? at my company and from other people who i know that has direct deposit they get paid either the night before the official pay day or on the actual day. we get paid on the 7th and 21st of each month if either of those days fall on a weekend or national holiday we get paid on the previous business day. i ask about how business is doing because it sounds more that your company does not have the funds necessary to pay its employees on time and has to wait a few extra days to get whatever credit line cleared etc. if anything you should be able to revert back to a paper check and be able to deposit into your account..I would ask accounting/payroll to switch you out of direct deposit they cant force you to have direct deposit if you do not want to
That sucks, bro. But no reason to panic until Wednesday. Living paycheck to paycheck is a drag. Been there, done that.
You should contact your company. Your direct deposited paycheck should be available on the day you are scheduled to be paid.
It's either management getting a couple of extra days to scrape money together for payroll, or some incompetence and/or laziness in the HR department that they can't process in time. Why not?
depends on the state, I think. If your payday is the 15th, your money should be in your account on the 15th. If the 15th is a Sunday, you should get paid on the 13th, not the 16th or 17th.
Here's info on the legal status of direct deposit in Texas: http://www.twc.state.tx.us/news/efte/electronic_fund_transfer_wages.html
every place i worked at here in california its always been optional i guess it could vary by state maybe someone here with some payroll/hr experience can shed light on that. some people just may not have bank accounts so they cash their checks, one of my employees here gets a paper check because he has some sort of overdraft he is trying to dispute and cant open a new account at another branch right now
I used to work for a company that did direct deposit but had a population of workers that didn't have bank accounts. They issued a cash card to those people that would be charged up with their paychecks. The workers could take the card to the ATM and withdraw cash.
I worked at a place that did this and it was incredibly annoying. I had direct deposit, but every once and a while something would go wrong, and they'd tell us to use the card. OK, fine, I'll go to an ATM where I'm hit with a $5 fee for using the stupid card for the company's incompetence. I'm glad it was just a summer job...
Everyplace that I've worked with direct deposit, they always make the direct deposit the night or day before pay day. So if it's 1st and 15th the money was usually in my account the night before and when it was every two weeks on Friday it was always in my account Thursday night. There is something fishy going on with your workplace.
Thursday is the 1st our payday. I just got an email to 'be aware' since Friday (Good Friday) is a banking holiday that our pay checks will not be posted into our checking accounts until Monday the 5th!!! There it is again the infamous 5 Day deposit. I could have walked out of here on the 1st with a check in my hands, go to the bank and cash it. But now I have to wait five days to get paid!!! It's not that I dont have money to fall back on, that isnt the issue here!!! This cant be legal!!!
I do not believe that Good Friday is a bank holiday in the United States. http://www.buyusa.gov/uk/en/us_bank_holidays.html
Sounds like you have procrastinators at your company. At a company I previoulsy worked at the accounting office would always stay late to finish everything right before a holiday, that way everyone got their money a day before. Also, the last company I worked at, my boss gave us our check in our hand on Friday, for that week! I don't know if THAT was even legal.
I am not sure who the companies bank is. Is there an easy way to figure this out? Can some banks be on holiday and others not? Thanks for the help! If Friday is not an actual bank holiday, there is definitely something fishy going on.
