link CHESTER, Pa. -- Divers resumed searching the Delaware River on Friday for the father of Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson. Floyd "Pete" Nelson was reported missing from his job at a tugboat repair shop about noon Thursday. Floyd Nelson was last seen near the water, and officials said it was feared that he had fallen into the river just south of the Commodore Barry Bridge. Nelson's lunch and car keys were found in a tug's kitchen area, and his car was in the nearby lot, police said. Searchers were concentrating on an area near a three-foot gap between the tug and the dock, Chester Police Chief John Finnegan said Friday. "If he was in that location and something happened to him medically, he might have fallen over," Finnegan said. "I can't think of anything else, unless he walked off, but I don't know why he would." Mayor Wendell Butler said the U.S. Coast Guard and divers searched the waters until dark Thursday and the search resumed shortly after 8 a.m. Friday. Floyd Nelson, a Vietnam War veteran, wrote a book about his son's basketball career in 2004 entitled "Jameer." The Magic drafted his son in 2004 out of Saint Joseph's.
I pray that he is OK...it doesn't sound great. Granted, I don't know the details but if you made millions wouldn't you want your dad to retire from his tugboat repair job?? I hope he still has the opportunity...
This may come as a shock, but some parents of pro athletes actually DON'T want to mooch of their children for the rest of their lives...
Maybe he did it cause he had a passion for repairing or it was a hobby. Who knows? Either way it seems tragic.
If I made millions and wanted to take care of my parents I wouldn't call it "mooching" and my parents wouldn't call it "mooching". Now maybe Jameer wanted to take care of his father but his father wanted to keep working, that's fine. But I don't call it "mooching" if a kid wants to take care of their parents financially.
He could be like my parents and friends of mine who continue to work there simply for the companionship. Maybe he likes hanging out with his friends. I agree, I hope he still has the opportunity to retire or keep working.
jameer nelson doesn't make that much money, he isn't lebron james. and you guys make fun of artest blowing his money, that's the exact mindset, not that I'm great with money, but i understand jameer isn't super rich.
He "mooched" off of them during the years they raised him to become what he is today. It may have been a personal decision by his father to work, but I'm just saying that giving back to your parents after all they did for you is not mooching.

Update http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/new..._river_for_Jameer_Nelsons_dad__N_J__teen.html Search for Jameer Nelson’s father is suspendedBy David O’Reilly Inquirer Staff Writer David Swanson / Inquirer staff photographer A group of unidentified friends or family members arrived this afternoon as the search progressed. » More images RELATED STORIES Missing teenager recalled as helpful Strong currents in the Delaware River near Chester forced the search for Floyd "Pete" Nelson, father of Orlando Magic basketball star Jameer Nelson, to be suspended this afternoon. Nelson was reported missing near the river last night. "One of our divers was pulled [downriver] about 15 feet when we dropped him in," Chester fire commissioner James J. Johnson explained shortly after 2 p.m. "That wasn't too good." The underwater search for Nelson, 57, was halted early in the afternoon. The plans were to resume the operation when the ebb tide slackened at around 3:30. Instead it was cut off at about 4 p.m. A team of about 42 divers, police, firefighters and others has focused on the water and shoreline around the Hays Tug & Launch wharf, where Nelson, of Chester, was last seen yesterday afternoon. According to Johnson, the captain of a tug tied up at the wharf reported seeing Nelson, who works for Hays and had just finished painting the underside of a barge in a dry dock area. The captain said Nelson was walking toward a docked tug where employees sometimes ate lunch and took breaks. Rescuers believe he may have slipped into a three-foot gap between the tug and the dock. Johnson said earlier today that he had not set a deadline for calling off the search. "I don't care if it's dark and snowing six feet," he said. "We'll keep at it until I'm satisfied there's nothing more we can do." Jameer Nelson reportedly has visited the scene and has talked with searchers. In 2004, Floyd Nelson, a Vietnam War vet, wrote Jameer, a book about his son, who was also a basketball standout at Chester High School and St. Joseph's University. Jameer Nelson was drafted that year by the NBA's Orlando Magic, for whom he is a point guard.
Tragic. I swear this week just seems to be the week of death for me. Aside from stories like this, I found out my step-grandfather found out he has prostrate cancer, my girlfriends roommate found out that not only does he have kidney cancer, but it has spread to such a degree that they think he has less than a year to live. He is 22 years old. My best friends brother died in a car wreck today - and to top it all off, Owen Wilson tried to kill himself. OWEN WILSON! If that dude cannot find a reason to live, we are all screwed. It has been a bad week.
