What about Nelson instead of Lue and/or Gaines. He's a true PG and could be our starter for his first season. CNNSI: BIO: Nelson earned the prestigious Naismith and Wooden Awards as the nation's top college player following a stellar senior season at St. Joseph's. Nelson averaged 20.6 points and 5.3 assists for the Hawks, who went 30-2. He first received notice as a freshman with an impressive NCAA Tournament showing. A native of Chester, Pennsylvania, Nelson's strength lies in his knowledge and ability to play the point guard position. His weaknesses include his shooting and defensive problems due to his lack of size. Nelson applied for the draft last summer before returning to school. ANALYSIS: Nelson was College Basketball News' Player of the Year after leading the Hawks to an undefeated regular season. He is an outstanding floor general with good leadership skills. Nelson has excellent strength and showed an improved outside shot. But he is undersized and some wonder about his quickness defending top-flight point guards. Nelson has shown shooting range in pre-draft workouts and is expected to be drafted in the mid to late first round.
I would love to see him in a Rockets uniform, but I just don't see it happening. Orlando has been talking way to much about how excited they are to be able to get him when they did.
I would love to get him but I would imagine that any mention of getting him would probably make Wiesonwhatever back off of the deal even more. But if we could get him then that would be great.
But they would have Francis for starting then, they won't need Nelson and Lue or Gaines have a better profile to be the second PG !
Nice a credentials huh! Anyone remember a player who's a proven winner and with leadership qualities and brought a championship to his college team? If he ends up as a bust, he could be compared to Mateen Cleaves..
Mmmm... what the other guys said. Love to get him and poke Wisenbrutt in the, uh, butt. It would be a surprise if he was included and would be an amazing grab by CD.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, Mateen Cleves isn't the one to be compared to, there was a PG that came out a year before him with the same credentials. UConn PG Khalid El-Amin. I would love to get Jameer Nelson, but we're not getting him. Wouldn't mind adding Brevin Knight though. He's a pure passing PG and wouldn't be a bad addition off the bench.
I'd love to get him and give him a shot. I think at worst he'll be a quality back up, but I doubt Orlando will be interesting in giving him up if they're rebuilding. (which is why I think Reece Gaines must be really really terrible)
He's much more consistent that JWill was his last year at Duke and is better at controlling the tempo of the game. His jumpshot and strength are just as good, if not better, and he didn't have Boozer and Battier and Dunleavy to help him out
this kid has got a heck of a jumpshot and he's a clutch shooter. i think he's gonna be a great pick but i doubt he's getting traded. the magic seem pretty excited to land him. el-amin was about 5'10" and on the chubby side. jay williams did not have nearly as consistent a jumpshot as nelson but was more athletic.
I doubt he will be a Rocket either. They are very high on them. But, I found on an Orlando board on realgm that he doesn't fly in for his press conference till this week. So, maybe there is a chance he is part of the deal since they scheduled it days after Howard. But still, I doubt it.
Or maybe thay are going to announce the trade and have a duel press conference to show off their new back court of Francis, Mobley & Nelson.
The guys I would compare him with are Tim Hardaway (more than anyone really) or Damon Stoudamire, not Al-Amin or Cleeves. The guy can shoot, run the team, very quick, and is very powerfull for his size. While I can understand the thinking leading some of the taller PGs going before him (Livingston, Harris, Gordon), I really question a fellow but much weaker 6 footer Telfair going before him. My hunch is big mistake by Portland.
If the Trade is made official on July the 14th and Lue declares for free agency, what is the possibility of Nelson being included in our trade?
Although I'd happily go for Jameer Nelson as a substitute in the trade, I'd be surprised if that happened. However, don't summarily discount Reece Gaines as our eventual PG (if the trade ever goes down ). I'm really anxious to see what a coach with teaching ability like JVG can do with Gaines. However, his emergence won't happen overnight. It may take half the season, maybe all year. It may never happen at all. However, I like our situation if his "potential" is poured out of the bottle.
