An old, retired crank recently moved in next to my parents. The problem is, he likes to spend all day in his backyard, and their dogs like to bark at him. So he call the cops out, but they can see (a) that the dogs aren't any louder than any other dogs, and (b) that he's a crank, so they do nothing. So for his next step, he puts a noise detector up on his side of the fence. We think he's trying to build some kind of case against my parents. Would a white noise generator jam his detector? If not, what would? Any help would be appreciated.

Build a case? Decibel readings are required to prove noise violations in court. The consequence? What? $13 fine or 6min community service?

You could put those anti-barking collars on the dogs. It'll keep them from barking by giving them a little electric shock each time they bark.

Or you could try and see how water-proof his sound detector is with a good blast from your water hose.

Hey I am on your neighbors side.

its not unreasonable for one to spend time in his backyard and not have to listen to dogs barking the whole time.

I knew a crappy trumpet player in college who got pissed because the neighbors complained about him practicing in his apartment. He was completely oblivious to how annoying it was to everyone else.

    1. Take a [IMG]

    2. Load into a [IMG]

    3. Choose option a or b:

    a) Shoot the dog.*
    b) Shoot the neigbor.

Note: Shooting a dog may ostracize you from society and you could be be portrayed as larger scumbag then a human murderer.

I would be annoyed too if the dogs barked all day. When the yard guy comes for next door I bring my dog in.

This is Bellaire, and the noise ordinance there doesn't go by decibels, so we speculate that he must be planning some kind of civil action.

We're not big on the idea of shocking the dogs, especially since they're not problem barkers who just bark for the hell of it. They're actually pretty well behaved. Aren't dogs supposed to bark? It's not like they're out at all hours of the night, howling at the moon.

Sorry but I have to agreee with your neighbor here.....
Why is it wrong for your neighbor to sit in his backyard without your dogs annoying the hell out of him by barking????
I swear our society is sooo messed up that we now we care more about animals than humans.
Regardless your dogs will probably leave him alone when they get used to him anyways....

My dog used to bark at my neighbors to the right. Husband and wife both took time to get to know it one day and now he stopped. However on the other side the old ladies kind of just yell at him when he comes to the fence so he barks at them.

We have a chain link fence so I can't help him not seeing them. But maybe get the older man to give them some treat you provide one day and they will chill out.

I mean if he is all by himself he may be lonely. It might be nice if he gets to know the dogs so he doesnt ridicule them all the time.

It is always nice to get along with your neighbors. I have tracked down my neighbors pets when they have gotten out and they are not home. He is old and may not do what I do but maybe he will give you all call if someone suspicious was around your house or if you dogs got loose.

Not to make this thread about the dogs, but these are little 10 pound critters. Their other neighbors have lived next to and behind my parents for a long time, and have never complained. The neighbors this guy bought from never complained in over 5 years. Either this guy is doing something to tick the dogs off right by the fence, or he's just a grump. He certainly doesn't like dogs - he's a cat person.

Can you put yourself in my parents' place? You live in a house for over 10 years with these little dogs, and suddenly some guy moves in and starts calling the cops and hanging a noise detector, all when they're well within the law to have these dogs. Who the hell is he to say that their dogs are a problem when no one else has an issue? How'd you like him moving in next to you?

No need to shock them - use a spray bottle. There's not reason for them to be barking constantly at something that isn't new. Their neighbors shouldn't have to put up with it either.

If our dogs are outside and start barking at something, I run outside and do something about it. It's called consideration and common courtesy. (My dogs are about 18 pounds each)

Again, not to make this about the dogs, but it's pretty clear that this guy is coming up to the fence and doing something (gardening?) to agitate them. If he really is just sitting around out there, he must be sitting right by the fence. The other neighbors sit out in their yards and the dogs never bother them. Really, even when the other neighbors' own dogs come to the fence, there's about 2 minutes of barking and then it just stops. My parents' dogs are certainly not howling at the fence all afternoon while this guy sits outside sipping ice tea.

Your other neighbor may be like me. One of my neighbors has an annoying terrier. I have to literally hide on the other side of the yard out of his sight on some days to play with my dog without the terrier going nuts. I don't complain because I like our neighbors and this is one of those things I can live with. But trust me there are days I wonder if BigSherv is going to have to chocke a b****. I deal with it by petting it for a while and on really annoying days I throw it a large milk bone. He is a greedy dog so he takes it and hides so he can enjoy it in privacy for a while.

Small dogs are loud. Trust me I know/

Yeah, marshal up some patience and take some time for you or your parents to let the dog get to know the neighbor.

Chalk me up as another person that sides with your neighbor.

If you ever tried to put a baby to sleep while your neighbor's damned German Shepherd and Lab were barking like crazy and you'd understand my frustration.

Be a considerate neighbor and keep your damned dogs quiet.

You should get a tall ladder and just watch him for a couple of days. I mean go up there and bring a pack and a radio and just chill. See if this guy is doing something to annoy your pooches. If he is, call the cops on him. If he isn't, you need to find a way to shut your dogs up.

Yes, thanks to everyone for changing my question into a referendum on my parents' dogs. Instead of being helpful, you superimposed your own experiences on my family's situation and flung judgments at us like a monkey chucks its own cr@p. Like this jack@$$ comparing two giant dogs "barking like crazy" and disturbing a baby sleeping (inside and at night I presume) to three tiny dogs, in the middle of the day, yapping at a retiree neighbor lurking on the other side of a fence, when the other neighbors haven't ever complained in over 10 years. I'm sorry your neighbor kept your baby awake, but that's no reason to imply that my parents are inconsiderate or to damn their harmless little dogs.
