This one really hurts. I can't overstate the influence he and his show had in my life. The world lost a good man today. May he be at peace.

This was an awesome guy. He is still the reason why I love Cardigan sweaters.

Mr. Rogers was my favorite TV show when I was little. He's one of my all-time heroes, and is one of the most genuinely good people ever on TV. He never wrapped up his show in marketing products, but in teaching children to use their imagination and creativity.

One thing that I just though about -- a good story about Mr. Rogers. I was watching some stupid hidden camera show on TV one time, and one of the gags was that they were in this exclusive hotel with all these celebrities, and someone from the hotel was going to tell them the TV would not work, and they couldn't replace it. Some of the celebs got slightly irate about it and were very pushy. Mr. Rogers was one of the celebrities, and when told this, he consoled the woman and said something to the effect of "The greatest television is your imagination", and he was so gracious to her that she couldn't hold in the show's premise. He was 100% genuine class.

What better way to celebrate and remember the life of this great teacher than to walk away from his death with such a remarkable memory. Thank you for sharing. Hes anyone ever read the poem by Emily Brontë called "Stars"? After learning of the passing of Mister Rogers I tried to find a poem that best agreed with the relationship most of us had with him and his show. At the moment I like this one but I'm still looking for others.

    Stars

Ah! why, because the dazzling sun
    Restored our earth to joy
    Have you departed, every one,
    And left a desert sky?

All through the night, your glorious eyes
    Were gazing down in mine,
And with a full heart's thankful sighs
    I blessed that watch divine!

I was at peace, and drank your beams
As they were life to me
And revelled in my changeful dreams
    Like petrel on the sea.

    Thought followed thought—star followed star
    Through boundless regions on,
While one sweet influence, near and far,
Thrilled through and proved us one.

Why did the morning dawn to break
So great, so pure a spell,
And scorch with fire the tranquil cheek
    Where your cool radiance fell?

    Blood-red he rose, and arrow-straight
His fierce beams struck my brow:
The soul of Nature sprang elate,
But mine sank sad and low!

My lids closed down—yet through their veil
    I saw him blazing still;
And steep in gold the misty dale
    And flash upon the hill.

I turned me to the pillow then
To call back Night, and see
Your worlds of solemn light, again
Throb with my heart and me!

It would not do—the pillow glowed
And glowed both roof and floor,
And birds sang loudly in the wood,
And fresh winds shook the door.

The curtains waved, the wakened flies
    Were murmuring round my room,
Imprisoned there, till I should rise
And give them leave to roam.

    O Stars and Dreams and Gentle Night;
    O Night and Stars return!
And hide me from the hostile light
That does not warm, but burn—

    That drains the blood of suffering men;
    Drinks tears, instead of dew:
Let me sleep through his blinding reign,
    And only wake with you!

A Sad Day in the Neighborhood

Sad day in neighborhood: Beloved Mister Rogers dies

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Fred Rogers, who gently invited millions of children to be his neighbor as host of the public television show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" for more than 30 years, died of cancer early Thursday. He was 74.

Rogers died at his Pittsburgh home, said family spokesman David Newell, who played Mr. McFeely on the show. Rogers had been diagnosed with stomach cancer sometime after the holidays, Newell said.

"He was so genuinely, genuinely kind, a wonderful person," Newell said. "His mission was to work with families and children for television. He produced not only these thousands of programs, but these books and records. That was his passion, his mission, and he did it from day one."

From 1968 to 2000, Rogers, an ordained Presbyterian minister, produced the show at Pittsburgh public television station WQED. The final new episode, which was taped in December 2000, aired in August 2001, though PBS affiliates continued to air back episodes.

Rogers composed his own songs for the show and began each episode in a set made to look like a comfortable living room, singing "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood," as he donned sneakers and a zip-up cardigan.

I watched Mr. Rogers every day until I was 5 years old. Although there was somewhat of a hokey quality to his show, it was refreshing to see a children's TV show that wasn't a ruse for selling toys. You wish everyone could have his attitude toward children. If anyone deserves a better place after life, it's him (although I suspect he'd make any after-life scenario a better place).
