Freak: Man, I am the first to admit that there are some REALLY bad meat substitutes out there. Here are my favorites:

    Burgers: <a href="http://www.bocaburger.com/">Boca</a> and <a href="http://www.amys.com/">Amy's</a>

I like the Boca's and Amy's best, but I don't mind the Gardenburger flame grilled hamburger style.

    Chicken/Turkey: Boca grilled chicken patties, <a href="http://www.morningstarfarms.com/">Morningstar Farms</a> chicken nuggets , <a href="http://www.veat.com/">Veat</a> and <a href="http://www.tofurkey/">Tofurkey</a>.

If you just want a quick chicken sandwich, the Boca's are terrific. Morningstar makes good chicken nuggets and battered chicken patties. Veat is this really cool chicken substitute that tastes just like chicken with NO seasoning. This is great for fajitas, grilled stuff, etc.

Tofurkey is a good substitute for Thanksgiving turkey. It tastes very good.

    Ham: <a href="http://www.worthingtonfoods.com">Wham</a>

You get it in a roll and can slice it up for sandwiches or use it like a regular ham baked in the oven. This stuff is great! It is not listed on the website, but it is available. You just have to order it.

Sausage/Bacon: Boca breakfast patties and Morningstar Farms Leanies and bacon replacement.

All are terrific and taste very much like real sausage and bacon. The bacon doesn't crisp up like regular bacon but it is great for BLT's.

Hot Dogs: Litelife Smart Dogs or Tofu Pups

These are the best fake hot dogs on the market. Split them down the middle and fill them with cheese. mmmmmmmm.

Lunchmeat: Litelife Turkey, Tofurkey slices, and <a href="http://www.yvesveggie.com/">Yves</a> deli and ham slices.

The Litelife turkey, IMO, is the best. Tofurkey slices taste more like real turkey but are a little drier than Litelife. Yves stuff is very good, much like bologna.

    Hamburger: Morningstar Farms crumbles.

This is a great replacement for ground beef. I put it in tacos all the time and it tastes GREAT!

    Frozen Entrees: Amy's

Amy's make everything from cheese lasagna and ravioli to great pizzas, veggie chili, pot pies and TREMENDOUS skillet stir fry stuff. They are a great company and really make realistic meat substitute dishes.

Hope this helps. Let me know what you think if you try any. You can get most of these from grocery stores.

Morningstar Farms and Worthington are owned by Kellog's so they are everywhere. You can find basically everything else in supermarkets with the exception of Wham, Tofurkey and Veat. You'll have to make a trek to Whole Foods for that.

I'm personally not too down w/ the meat substitutes (it kinda grosses me out to be honest [IMG]), but I love most everything that Amy's makes. Those 'Indian Gourmet' dishes are pretty decent too.

Oh and Nancy's makes pretty good Quiches (though they have like 33g of fat or something).

So far I like the Morningstar Farms chicken patties and burgers. The Garden Burger is what killed me! There's all these chunks of stuff in there that I have no idea what they are, while the MSF was more like just plain meat. Looking forward to checking out some of the others you listed. Thanks.

Oh, God, don't eat the regular Gardenburger! That thing is hideous! Their flame grilled "hamburger style" burger is fine but it even doesn't compare to the Boca. I don't blame you for getting grossed out by the plain Gardenburger. That is pretty wierd!

I always think of Eddie Murphy when I see those things - "McDonald's don't make no green peppah burger." [IMG]

Jeff, I'm having a bar-b-que and I wish to extend my invitation. Email me and I'll tell you how to git to my cabin in the woods.

I found more meat substitutes there than I've ever seen in my life. I've tried a lot of them - some are amazing, others not so much - but not all.

Watch out Jeff. He might try to slip some squirrel in on you, telling you it's "tofu-irrel". Be careful! [IMG]
