We went to the ultrasound today and discovered our child-to-be is a girl. I didn't really have a preference but it is nice to know. Now, she's got an identity. I can call her by name instead of saying he or she, or it, or the fetus or whatever. Healthy so far as we can tell.

Now the Chinese question if any speakers have wandered over from GARM: what would "lokyin" mean, most likely in Mandarin?

Congrats, didn't know you were expecting.

You are contributing to the ultimate end of racism. The more bi-racial, the better!

I speak some Cantonese... practically illiterate in Mandarin though...therefore I may not be the best one to help you here. But I will try my best. ;)

'Lokyin' sounds like a name to me in Cantonese. Are you trying to get a Chinese name for your daughter? In Cantonese, 'Lok' means happy. 'Yin' is the name of a bird species. It is also a very common first name for Chinese girls. I know there are other members here who are much more proficient in Chinese or Mandarin than I am. So please correct me if I am wrong. :)

Thank you! My mother is Cantonese and her name was Lokyin before it was changed to her middle name when she became a naturalized citizen. She moved here when she was about four and her Cantonese and Manderine aren't too hot. I think the name sounds beautiful and I wanted to use it but she didn't know what it meant.

    Thanks again!

Congrats. We are due for an ultrasound to find out the sex of ours in a few weeks. My wife is keeping her fingers crossed for a girl to go with our son.

My wife is Taiwanese and speaks mandarin and had no idea what that meant. A lot of times the words are confusing when spelled out in english.

well i can help. except there's six tones in cantonese, so this is a stab in the dark at best (guessing what the original name was). but in mandarin lok-yin woudn't mean anything. because mandarin doesn't have ending consonant sounds.

lok 乐 can be the second character of "fai lok" --> which is happiness

yin 欣 also means happiness... maybe more of a contented... well i guess there's no direct translation.

if you have the Chinese character set I typed the characters after the phonetics... if not it will look like 道賓斯008's moniker.

So that's gonna be her middle name? Cool. Juan are you hispanic like your name suggests? I have to say, part latina, part asian... your daughter's gonna be really pretty.

just read Rocketforever's post... i guess yin can also be 燕, which means "swallow" so that's the bird species.

mandarin is easier to discern from phonetics because of pinyin. i learned that when i learned cantonese.

just realized that it could also be the last two characters of an idiom that means "very beautiful"...

hmm... you need to get Pryuen in here, he'd be able to tell you for sure.

Alas, JV is Franco-Texan (white) so we won't have that mix going on. But I am black and Chinese with a little Sioux Indian and Irish thrown in. My children were destined to be mixed regardless of who I married.

Thanks for the imput on the name. "Happy Swallow" or "Very Beautiful" work well. I was worried about using a name we didn't know the meaning of, having heard of people naming their daughters "Jezebel" or "Delilah" ("such nice Biblical names..."
