It seems all the elite teams are playing this "Detroit" style basketball

Gone are the days where you can ride two uber-superstars a la Kobe and Shaq to the championship. Nowadays, every team in the West has a balanced offense where any given night, some guy can go off for 20+ points. Dallas no longer relies on Dirk to put up 28-30 a game. Kobe isn't dropping 35 a game like two years ago. Utah has a solid starting five where everyone averages close to double digits. San Antonio, definitely, relies on a very team-oriented offense that doesn't rely solely on Duncan, Parker, or Ginobili. Looking at this trend, it's really not an option to sustain the JVG style basketball where two players carry 90% of the offensive load, because on any given night, I would rather have 5 guys play well than only two players play REALLY well.

Except the other teams aren't #2 in the league in defense. And the Pistons are traditionally near the bottom of the league in pace.

Here's Hollinger's ranks for the top teams in terms of defensive efficiency and pace:

(Team - Def. Eff. / Pace)
    Detroit - 3rd / 30th (Last)
    Boston - 1st / 20th
    San Antonio - 4th / 28th
    Phoenix - 15th / 4th
    Lakers - 8th / 6th
    Utah - 12th / 9th
    Dallas - 13th / 26th
    Houston - 2nd / 19th
    New Orleans - 6th / 25th

Their defenses all rank in the top half, which makes sense, but pace is all over the place. It just means that there's a lot of different ways of being successful in the regular season. Yes the past few NBA champs, the Spurs, Heat, and Pistons included, have been especially slow, plodding-type teams. If you had to pinpoint a team most similar to the Pistons of old, it would be the Pistons of today. Ha. Beyond that, San Antonio, Boston, and Houston (in that order) look similar in that they all have great defense and pace ratings in the lower half of the league. But who knows what all that means.

Oh, I was only echoing Tmac's description of the Rockets' current play. It's the fact that all five (including bench) guys are producing, and not just two. It reminds him of the Detroit team a few years ago that won the championship without a superstar.

Apparently Pace doesn't matter much. Defense does. Look we are right there with Boston with almost the same exact stats as the Rockets.

Lakers are top 10 in both categories - the only team to do that. Scary.

Pace has no bearing really, it's just to compare teams to the Pistons' style. For performance's sake you wanna look at off. and def. efficiency. In that case, Detroit Boston New Orleans and the Lakers are in the top 10 for both offense and defense. Now that's scary.

I wouldn't call it Detroit style. I don't think Detroit is really that great. Yeah, they won one championship recently, but note that the Cavs made it to the finals on a one man show in the east, only to get swept 4-0. They're 2nd right now, but in the east, with a west schedule, they'd be around 4-6.

I think you mean, the elite teams have done some crazy trades this year because of what Boston has started. Gathering 3 legit all stars in the east is scary. I'm pretty sure all these trades were a trickling effect of the Boston trades. The bottom feeds felt they had no chance to win anything much less a playoff spot, so many are rebuilding which greatly helped many of the elite teams. Rich got richer, poor got to rebuilding. Doesn't help that many GMs are idiots. That's why the same teams make the playoffs year after year.
