Be careful. If anyone in the U.S. even farts with their ass pointed East (i.e., in the general direction of Israel), s/he's called anti-Semitic.

If this story is true, it's extremely jacked-up.

Unless I am misreading the article, Israel actually isn't admitting they've done this. What's happened is that as a result of Ethiopian women saying it was done the director of health has ordered doctors NOT to administer it if there is any doubt as to whether the Ethiopian woman understands the long term effect.

It's not the same thing. Nowhere does she or anyone else that works for the government actually say that a coordinated effort was put together to administer this drug to the Ethiopian women against their wishes.

Now, that being said, I don't doubt that it is really what happened.

Silly thread title -- they gave the women Depo-P birth control so they didn't have to take a pill everyday -- millions of women around the world request the same thing every day.

Exactly. And Israel's government is actually concerned about these women not understanding what this medicine does, so it is stopping them from getting this. So they are looking out for their protection. Way to paint Israel as the villain again.

In the article it does say that some of the women were forced too and / or lied to about the injections.
[rquoter]According to the program, while the women were still in transit camps in Ethiopia they were sometimes intimidated or threatened into taking the injection. “They told us they are inoculations,” said one of the women interviewed. “They told us people who frequently give birth suffer. We took it every three months. We said we didn’t want to.” [/rquoter]

That said from the article I didn't get that this was an official policy of the Israel's government.

Also when I click on the link to the story it says "Page not Found"

Also, look at the source. I am in the Emirates right now and I can tell you that in any publication, even English-speaking ones, Israel is always portrayed in the worst light possible. I'm not saying Israel doesn't do things that are wrong - they do - but you have to take it with a grain of salt.

Between the original article and it's partner article:

    http://www.thenational.ae/news/worl...ccused-of-forcing-birth-control-on-ethiopians

All the accusations are being leveled directly by Israeli activists and sourced to either Israeli reports, Israeli television, or the women themselves.

This is not sterilization - it is a 3-month contraceptive.

So the thread title is misleading.

And the fact that Israeli activists and media can make accusations - whether correct or incorrect - is what distinguishes them from most of the Arab world - there you cannot accuse or criticize the government without fear of serious repercussions. No freedom of speech or of the media, as you have it in Israel.

    Even in the UAE.

Having already heard about this, I'm also going to point that the sources for this are dubious. The main Israeli newspaper reporting on this is called Haaertz, which from what I've heard.... is seriously, seriously unreliable.

Well it depends on how long they took it for. They were forced to take it every 3 months. If this continued for a very long time then it is a form of sterilization.

This is not about press freedom or Arabs vs Isrealis. Maybe i should have picked another source.

I'm not sure if this actually qualifies as sterilization. It is questionable. Israel's government definitely does discriminate. There is no doubt about that, but I don't know that this is a sure fire case of forced sterilization.

I would like to see more follow up on it, though.

It's not sterilization but it is forcing or tricking women to take birth control against their will. From the link Major posted
[rquoter]Eight years ago, the report said, officials at the centres threatened to deny an unspecified number of applicants entry into Israel if they refused the drug.

At the time of the 2009 study, Ms Eyal described the drug's use as part of an "unspoken policy" in Israel that aimed to reduce "the number of births in a community that is black and mostly poor".

    Oh, then no big deal.

Could you imagine if a country forced Jewish women to take contraceptives against their wishes? You freaks would be flipping out.

Can we have intelligent discussions without the use of the ad hominems please...your point could've been just as vividly delivered if you left the "you freaks would be flipping out" part off.

Give respect, take respect. At the end of the day, any race/gender/religion/subset, being forced against their will, or deceitfully misled, to take contraceptives with no intent of reducing their conception chances, is a problem that any reasonable person regardless of race/gender/religion/subset should be "flipping out" about. Its an invasion of basic human freedoms we (should) value together.
