why does Yao always wait for double team to come in the 4th quarter? I think he's playing scared. He waits for the double team so that he can give up the ball even though his teammates can't make a damn shot. In contrary, he's quite aggressive at the beginning of the game and the start of the 2nd half. I bet he scores most of his points during those times.
I think that the team is playing scared right now in 4th quarters when you consider how they keep letting games slip away in those final minutes. Yao and the team needs to play those 4th quarters with resolve and that will to win. Years ago, I remember hearing Magic Johnson once say as a TV analyist that 4th quarters is winning time. Right now, the team just doesn't have that kind of mindset about 4th quarters.
A couple games at the start of the season they handled the last minutes of games okay; but part of that was due to the other team screwing up also in some situations... There needs to be developed a killer instinct that makes the Rockets want to punish people... Right now everyone seems to have the jitters in these 'big games' mostly against Dallas, who seems to once again be the Rockets' arch-nemesis... Give Dallas credit though, Josh Howard shot the ball very well, and Dirk and Stackhouse made shots when Dallas needed them. The Rockets did not reciprocate with hitting shots when it mattered most: in the final minutes... It's on either Yao to power his way in in the post when he has an advantage, even over two defenders... and for TMac to slash to the basket himself, or be available when Yao has to pass to someone... The offense needs a lot of work, and Sikma and Yao need to watch game tape.
adelman tells him to pass WHEN you get doubled right away, not wait for the double. that's 2 completely different things.
Yao can't even get the freaking basketball in crunch time, they still havent found away to get him the darn ball in the post. Most of his points came from screen and roll plays, put backs and jump shots. In crunch time he couldn't even sniff the basketball they go away from as soon as there is difficulty in making a simple entry pass. In crunch time you freaking post up your biggest advantage and that should have been yao in the post with dirk guarding him. The mavs who have no post game whatsoever went to dirk in the post twice with dividends. The rockest simply didn't freaking execute, they didn't let yao touch the ball in the post close to the basket to get a high percentage shot. They shot jump shots and didn't go inside when they have the biggest advanatge.Lack of execution falls on the coach first then your intiators of your offensive front.
again what do u want them to do? just hold the ball and wait for yao to outfront dirk? that causes the offense to stagnate. people need to know that every team fronts yao now. and he's too slow to overcome that. that's why we need to run the pick and roll with him. who the hell doesn't want yao to get the ball if he can get the ball? only a stupid dude would jack up a jumper rather than go inside.
Yao has to understand that he is the DOMINANT big man in this league. He needs to learn to hold the ball with authority, so that when it is swiped at, people can't knock it out of his hands so easily. Maybe he needs a running back coach to teach him what good hands are. Yao has to learn to BEAT double teams if we are going to be championship teams. He is still 7'6" and needs to learn that he can shoot over the top of three men as long as he doesn't bring the ball down where they can steal it from him. If he gets proper position in the low post, when he gets the ball, he should be immediately turning around and shooting over his man, not falling away. If he jumps, he won't get blocked; especially if he doesn't fall away. But he will collect more fouls and free throws while putting the other teams big guys on the bench. I used to like it when Yao came straight down the middle of the lane with his hands in the air and then just turned around and posted up. No one can stop that because they can not impede your progress when you don't have the ball. I have not seen it this year. And I can't believe that we don't have an alley-opp play worked out for Yao when teams are fronting him. He should be catching the ball way up in the air and just dunking on the weak side help trying to stop him. Yao assists numbers should be 6 plus per game because he should only be passing to wide open shooters when giving up the ball after he has low post position. He could average over 10 assists a game if we had great shooters, but since we don't, although he may pass out for about 15 assists per game, he should average at least 6 from the shots that would be made. Crap! I would love to coach the Rockets for ONE freaking game to show RA that he is sucking big wind right now! Give me two days of practice with them and we would kick some teams ARSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Why singling out Yao? Why didn't Tmac attack the rim in the 4th quarter? Why all the contested jumpers? Why did you start a thread on something which has been discussed repeatedly in the game thread and many other threads too? You have 3 minutes to give the answers.
If we are up, it is worth the effort to take 10-15 seconds off the clock to get the ball to Yao. We want to take time off the clock anyway. But Adelman doesn't want to commit to feeding Yao so once they see that Yao is fronted and backside help is there, they just forget about him. Sometimes they don't even lob if there's no backside help.
The guards run the offesne like bats, sometimes they have him open as soon as the loose patience and look to the other side which again they don't even reverse the ball they dribble the clock out 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 and either committ a 24 second clock turnover or some ill advised jumper or double clutch contested lay up. James, head don't know how to make entry passes and don't care to make entry passes their idea of high percenatge shots are contested three pointers with 1 or 2 seconds remaining on the shot clock. It's on the coaching staff to get Yao free by setting back screens ,reversing the basketball and getting some players in the game to where they can't load up 4 guys on yao at one time.
Obviously you never watched Rockets basketball back when Hakeem was the center. He did the same thing. It's because when they wait for the double team and then kick it out, it allows the guard who's out at the 3 point line to either take an open 3, or pass it back into the post after he gets covered, so Yao can get an easier shot in single coverage.
The only problem with that logic is that the repost has vanished from the offense. Adelman is at fault for this. Let's not even mention the fact that we now have shot happy guards like Mike James and Bonzi who won't make the re-entry pass and will just jack up a bad shot themselves.
that's why we lost the lead in the first place. when tmac sat down, we tried to go to him and wasted a lot of time. and the offense stagnated. and they see us panicking and resorting to wack ass jumpers as time wound down b/c we wasted half of the shot clock trying to pass to yao. we've tried a few lobs when tmac was out during the spurs and suns game. he couldn't get to the ball fast enough. the way to beat the fronting is put tmac on the same side as yao, run the pick and roll and he can either pop out for that mid-range J or roll in for the potential dunk/layup if tmac is doubled on the drive. adelman wants a MOTION offense. if u keep holding the ball trying to get to yao and then msot of the time u fail, what kind of offense is that? it's APPARENT every team is going to front yao 85-90% of the game now. that's just the strategy right now point blank, straight up, all for everyone to see. we didn't beat it under JVG, who knows how to use big men. we won't beat it now. we must be thankful yao got up 18 shots last night and he should get around 18-20 shots every game.
I think it's obvious that Adelman wants Yao to pass when doubled and not shoot a shot over 2 people. Therefore it is very obvious that Yao is complying with coach's orders by waiting for the double and not immediately attacking, to lower the chance of losing the ball if the quick double comes, which might happen if he's backing down. This isn't even accounting for the fact that the repost has vanished from the offense so if Yao passes the ball out he is not getting it back.
but yao usually passes it across court or to the opposte side of the court b/c they usually use rafer's man to double off of. the only way u can repost as fast as possible b4 the guy re-doubles is if the guy yao passes to is on the same side. and hakeem can easily beat these fronting defenses with his quickness. no way would he be neutralized by this and the team struggles to get the ball to their big man.

What you said is nothing new either. IIRC you have said the same thing last night in one of the threads. Posters like you are the reason why this board is being flooded with garbage threads.
Yao knows how to do all those things listed above. Yao needs help to make him display those skills. First of all they need to design ways to get him freakin free in order to get in the position to start. They are fronting yao with 2 big guys and the players we have in the game get no respect so therefore you will constantly see this front and double front until players can make the defense be honest. You need to set more screens for yao to get a little space and breathing room. You need players in the game that have the ability to make a entry pass or are willing to learn how. You need another player that can break guys down to help create more options.
We lost in crunch time once again. Actually, I think it is still a pg problem. We need a much better pg to control the tempo.
