Yao is arguably the second best center in the league (some may argue for Kandi man). But is he an ALL STAR?

Actually I think he is. I had no where near these kind of expectations for him coming into the season, at least for his first year but he's shown he can hang with the best.

Yao has to compete with Vlade, Kandi, Dampier, and David Robinson for a spot. They usually take three, I think, so his odds don't look too bad.

With 1.3 billion people that could vote for Ming, others centers don't stand a chance on All-Star first team...

Wait, not all 1.3 billion chinese are net surfers. I take my word back. There are only 200 million net surfers in China. Other centers still don't stand a chance against Ming in all-star first team...

Ming's first NBA game was broadcasted to 150 million chinese TV sets... Also, Ming only need 3 millions votes to blow out the old all-star record of 2 million votes ;)

We here at cc should vote for Yao Ming 2 go 2 the All-Star game, we don't need 2 go 2 all the philosophical ranting that goes on around here about why he should or should not be an ALL-Star!;) We should vote 4 him bcuz he's a Rocket...and a darn GOOD one! And bcuz this is a ROXS site!! :D So far I've been voting everyday at www.nba.com 4 Yao Ming, Steve Franchise, and Cat!!;)

As I stated in another thread that just his home city Shanghai along is going to put Yao Ming over the top. The internet penetration rate is very high in that city of 14 million resident. Many of them are Sharks fans and have been following Yao's progress here in houston. I would not be surprised to see Yao smashes the all time record in votes (jordan's 2.4 million?)

Mercy! … Canada only had 31 million people, so you’re saying that there are only 6X as many net surfers in China as there are people in my country. What the pop. of the US? 300 million? In a couple of years there will probably be more net surfers in China than there are people in the US!! Somewhere in the bowels of the Rockets’ business offices there is a marketing man drowning in his own drool.

Actually there are only 60million net surfers in mainland, China.
Second to USA. But the majority of them are between the age
of 15-30, probably like sports and NBA much.

Quite frankly, I don't care if the Chinese fans stuff the ballot box or not. Even if they don't Yao would probably still be voted on the all star team. In the last couple of games he had been putting up all star numbers.

I know its a bit early but its kinda weird that the voting has been around for a while now and there hasnt been any updates on who is leading it whatsoever? I think that the nba may have been holding back the number because the fans in china have been probably predominately voting for ming and maybe other houston rockets thus making the results heavily towards certain players. Once the initial votes come out I will not be surprised at all if Ming is well ahead of shaq and if Ming leads the overall voting

Not only will I not be surprised if Yao Ming is leading in votes at the center position, I won't be surprised if he's leading all candidates in votes. And actually, I'll honestly be surprised if he isn't.

    1. We rockets fans are all voting for him.
    2. We all know he's getting plenty of votes back in China.
    3. Don't forget the Chinese American population. The Rockets sold out Golden State for instance because of the huge Chinese American population there.

It probably is going to have a bit of a backlash. I can just hear the commentators now saying it isn't right that he was voted in over Shaq, but that's the system and DEMS DA BREAKS!

It seems like every time the Rockets are on the road, there is a big Yao Ming fan group there and I'm sure they're voting too.

in the words of cnnsi.com "Yao recorded his third straight double-double tonight". THAT is what will make him an all-star this year.

Well Yao has the talent to be the 2nd best in the NBA, but he isn't it yet.

Ilgauskas is probably the 2nd best overall right now. In the West, it's Olowokandi. Brad Miller is more consistent as well. I don't know when it will happen, but I don't think Yao has EARNED the job of starting or backup center in the West yet. Obviosly, Yao has the potential to be voted in if Chinese fans actually do vote, but making the allstar team doesn't make you the best player at your position, it means you are the most popular.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if this was like the 2001 MLB All-Star game when Japan nearly elected 7 Seattle Mariner starters!! Could you imagine if the results came out and Kenny Thomas was one of the top 3 vote gettings at the forward position. Yao starting would be understandable...but Kenny Thomas or Cuttino?!?!
