I mean, does it really matter? James Gandolfini is dead. They're not going to have some other actor take over as Tony Soprano, and the show is over. So he might as well be dead. Am I missing something here?

Well yeah, it matters if you were fan of the show. I remember there being a huge discussion after the series ended, about whether he was dead or not. Everyone had their own theories and all. David always said he wanted to leave it up to the imagination of the viewer. But some prefered a solute ending. I know I did. I did not follow this series religiously to come up with my own interpretation of the ending. I wanted to see his vision.

Although reading everyone else's theories was pretty enjoyable.

That title should've been spoilered, both by the OP and Vox. The latter usually does decent journalism so it's surprising they wrote a heading like that. Until now, it's always been 'Soprano's creator finally discusses the famous ending' or something along those lines.

David Chase is a twat who hates the people that loved the show. Bougie unappreciative jerk who probably made up that stupid artsy fartsy ending so he could do a Sopranos movie when he has to pay some bills.

I took it this way: Tony Soprano chose a life of violence where his own death was always imminent. You could be walking down the street or eating a nice dinner out with the family one second and the next second you have no perception of anything. You would never see it coming.

My imagination says the whole family died in a hail of bullets and there were two shooters. I think I will stick with that.

And that movie idea backfired when Gandolfini died in real life.

If he didn't write a death, and he originally didn't say anything, he's not dead. He shouldn't have to answer to that or any other event that wasn't in the script. People were so much more appreciative of original, individual screen narratives long ago; no sequels, conversions between TV and cinema, no conventions, online/media speculation or reboots.
