I heard a rumor that Houston Cougar Football would be moved to division II...What the freak. That can't be true. It just can't be. Anybody???
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2001-10-17-divisionia.htm It's true. Division I-AA, not Division II.
http://espn.go.com/ncf/news/2001/1018/1265862.html No it is not true. While there is an article out that mentions it, it is not totally factual. The only reason UH is on the list is because one year, 1999, they played only 4 games vs D1 teams. According to this articel you have to average 5 a year. In 2000 UH played 5 D1 home games. THUS their "2 year average" was 4.5 This year they play 6, so there new 2 year average will be 5.5 The article also mentions USM being knocked to D1 status. PLEASE they are anually one of the top 35 teams in the nation.
Please read my link Ty_Webb. There are other requirements besides averaging 5 home games vs. I-A opponents every 2 years.
Keep in mind that this is just a proposal that has not passed yet. play at least five regular-season home games vs. I-A opponents each season and average no less than 15,000 in attendance. Does UH meet the attendance requirement? They would require I-A schools to hand out at least 90% (or 76.5) of the 85 football scholarships allotted to major-college programs in a given season and offer a minimum of 16 sports (including at least four men's and six women's) and 200 scholarships overall. Are you sure that UH meets this requirement? If yes on both then the Coogs should have nothing to worry about.
In that article, they have a list of the school that fail to meet the attendance requirement. UH wasn't on that list. I know the attendance is terrible, but I think they draw enough to meet that number. I'm not sure about the other requirement (scholarships) but I would guess they meet that, too. Off the top of my head, I can't think of what sports they offer other than basketball, football, baseball, softball, golf, and track, but I would imagine they meet the quota.
1. Baseball 2. W. Basketball 3. M. Basketball 4. M. Golf 5. W. Swimming 6. M Track 7. W. Track 8. Softball (thanks KF!) 9. Volleyball 10. Cross Country Mens 11. Cross Country Women 13. Football 14. W. Soccer 15. If Cheerleading is a sport 16. M. Indoor Track 17. W. Outdoor Track UH averages over 17K for games too. Like I said, that article is not totally factual.
