Participated in the slam-dunk competition during the 1993 NBA All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City -- a Chinese source says he finished second .

Recorded 45 double-doubles during the 1993-94 season, the seventh highest total in the NBA

He finished his second season with 18.4pts, 10.1rebs and 1.41blocks a game. That is almost better than Yao of last season.

I wonder how much he weighed back then.

I don't remember him coming in second place, but he did participate that year. It was the year Harold Miner won it. Spoon was drafted a couple of spots ahead of our pick, Robert Horry, in the '92 draft. Coming out of college he had skills. He was supposed to be the next Barkley. Those stats tell you that Yao has to pick it up this season to be "the man".

Except for his 48%FG shooting he did have a better season than Yao. Poor CSpoon was the best player on the worst team in the league that year.

he was going to be the next Barkley when he started

... I hope he has lost some weight this summer and can play at least well enough to hold Barkley's jock

Spoon costs this team 5+ million dollars each of the next 2 seasons under contract....

BArkley came to camp overweight, but talked about quitting drinking at least. Barkley also sacrificed financially - the 1 million dollar season so we could sign Pippen - another story....

I realize that Mr. Van Gundy has absolutely nothing to do with personnell decisions - all blame rests on Carroll Dawson, but we are paying a lot for this former Knick.

Spoon makes Mo Taylor seem like a bargain at 8 million ++

we didn't give weatherspoon his contract and we had to take some kind of crap back to get out from under moochies deal which was longer. clarence is atleast serviceable and had some good games last season.

I guess you'd rather have Moochie Norris and John Amaechi, then.

I remember Spoon because of the Rookie card he had that had Shaquille O'neal guarding him which was also O'neals rookie card and it made Spoons card worth 10 bucks back then. The hype was so much around O'neal that it made a Spoon rookie card worth more than a lot of other players lol.

No - I do not want Moochie back... He was a black hole dribbling the ball...

I think Spoon is a financial burden this year and next. Any deal we have done with NY Knicks sucks - we ended up with Glen Rice after the Shandon Anderson sign and trade. This deal was to "help Shandon out" --we took on a 9 mil to 11 mil per year shooter in Glen Rice.

Rice was broken down. No asset.

I stand corrected - Spoon did have some good games and I would rather have him than Moochie- so I feel better now and everything is alright in the world.

    thank you...

I like spoon as well cause he plays within his own game...he doesn't try to do so much. He knows his role as a vetran and he does it well. He is a guy that we don't have to worry about doing stupid things like moochie always did.

An explosive forward despite his 6-7 frame, Weatherspoon dazzled a national audience in the Slam-Dunk Championship at the NBA All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City, finishing second to the Miami Heat's Harold Miner.

Dude, you seem to have a creative imagination when it comes to the deals that the Rockets have done. We traded for spoon because he was a financial burden for less length than Moochie. That alone makes it a good deal. Second, I seriously doubt that we took Glen Rice simply to "help Shandon out." Given Alexander's rep as a semi-tight owner, I don't believe he would take Glen Rice without being convinced that he would be an asset to our team.

I remember when spoon came out of college he was compared to Charles Barkley b/c of his size and body type. He was a good rebounder and hardworker but never panned out to be a star.

    3 things

first off, you are welcome (you thanked me for the reminder about Mooch)

second, Mooch's contract is longer than Spoon (and at least Spoon might be good for 15 mins a night)

third - on Glen Rice - just think about this... Rice is off the books - and has been for a while ...Shandon Anderson is still in the league (at $7 million per year)
