Then it is. I actually liked the sparks he provides in the limited garbage times for the spurs. At least he has a decent body, 6-10, 260 for a pf, no more a undersized pf or passed-his-prime all star. Anyone has more insider information on this guy?

I heard he has a hard time staying in shape... Hopefully he isn't a larger Bonzi..

Two Bonzi's is scary... yet a blessing to the fast food chains here in H-Town

However he is young and has shown potential.. I heard he has no leap and misses dunks just because his vertical is so low... However I would really like to pass on Deke so we have an open Roster spot.. I love Deke as much as the next guy, but realistically he has no role in an Adelman Offense

Somebody on the Spurs forum said he lost 30 pounds last year.

The question is: Is he better than Jake?

In our new offense, yes. Jake is a bumbling oaf. Deke may not be very fast, but he has some grace to his game besides not catching passes. Butler will fit in much better than Jake in our fast-paced offense and is only 22 years old. He played very well in New York the year before last. He got out of shape and rotted on San Antonio's bench last year. I have heard he back in shape so I expect good things out of him. He is also probably good for about 1/3 of his minutes at PF.

Paul Shirley called him one of the worst players he had ever seen in his book. But maybe that was just out of bitterness that he was cut from the team.

He basically finished his tenure with the Kicks with a good month of play in April. That got him his current contract.

This is like the Spurs paid half the price for what Amir Johnson got except in this case the guy turns out to be a bust.

Don't worry, Jackie Butler will turn out to be quite surprisingly good this year.

He has the tools, but didn't have the opportunity nor determination last year. But this is his contract year. So we can expect him to be at the very least better than his last season in Knicks. That'll be great for the price we paid for him.

Good article on Butler's performance this summer:

Young Spurs seek roster spot - Butler shows he can play somewhere, while White lacks strength

Web Posted: 07/11/2007 10:39 PM CDT

    Johnny Ludden
    Express-News

LAS VEGAS — Jackie Butler and James White played in 17 games between them last season. Neither made a single appearance in the playoffs, and most of their work came after practice or long before fans started filing through the arena doors.

But here in the desert, where the temperature hit nearly 115 degrees this week, the Spurs' two youngest players were finally able to shed their sport coats and jeans and pull on a uniform. And after five games in the NBA summer league, Butler and White both look capable of playing their way off the Spurs' roster — albeit for entirely different reasons.

Butler had 11 points and six rebounds during 31 minutes as the Spurs concluded their schedule here Wednesday with a 79-68 loss to Minnesota. With the exception of his foul trouble, the 22-year-old center was one of the Spurs' best players during the five games, averaging 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds, both highs for the team.

"For the most part," said Spurs assistant coach Don Newman, "I thought Jackie had a very good week.

"I think the next thing for him is to obviously get in a situation where he can play some minutes. I think if he was ever in a situation where he could play and knew his minutes were coming, I think you would see a guy who would certainly improve."

That situation, however, doesn't figure to be with the Spurs, who are deep and experienced at the center and power forward positions with Tim Duncan, Fabricio Oberto, Robert Horry, Francisco Elson and Matt Bonner.

The Spurs also don't have the luxury of sending Butler to Austin to play in the Development League because he's already been in the NBA for more than two seasons. And while Butler has impressed some scouts with his footwork, soft hands and instincts, those same scouts question whether he will ever be successful playing in the Spurs' defensive system, which requires the team's big men to make reads and communicate scheme changes to teammates.

At least two teams have inquired about Butler's availability during the past week, and the Spurs are expected to consider any deal that would allow them to get out of paying the $2.4 million he has on his contract this season.

Butler didn't appear to hurt his stock this week. In poor physical condition for most of the first half of last season, he has shed about 30 pounds since joining the Spurs. He showed nice touch on his shot and passed well out of the occasional double team.

"He did the things we asked him to do," Newman said. "He came prepared. He ran the floor extremely well as a big, and we certainly were going to force feed him down on the block and give him an opportunity. I thought he responded."

Butler's biggest problem was foul trouble, and referees lacking NBA experience exasperated his struggles.
Players are allowed up to 10 personal fouls in summer league. Butler picked up eight in two games and seven in another.

"I thought he had a very physical mentality," Newman said. "But as the game goes on, you have to learn how to adjust."

I have already given Ludden grief over this Yogi-ism: "exasperated" rather than "exacerbated."

I feel sorry for the team buffets with Jackie and Bonzi on the same team now. Better call the caterer!

Does Butler have a ring or was he on the inactive list for the playoffs? I'm only asking because he could be our "championship experience".

The last year of his contract is a team option, so essentially, Jackie is an expiring contract, if need be. I believe he's making $2.35 million this year.

    Expiring contracts this year:
    Bob Sura: $3.84 million
Jackie Butler: $2.35 million (team option the following year)
    Bonzi Wells: $2.284 million
John Lucas III: $770,610 (team option the following year)
Steve Novak: $687,456 (team option the following year)

    TOTAL: $9,932,266

To be honest last time i saw him play was as a Knick and he looked pretty darn good then. i think adelman will play to he's strengths. he'll be a 5 points 5 boards 1 block player off the bench. this guy alone is worth more then Vspan.

eh, I'm always skeptical when the only thing mentioned about a guy is potential.

but at 22 and a 2.3 mil contract it's pretty low risk.

if he is goin to be on the active roster we are going to have to move some more players. our roster is loaded right now...which is definitely a good thing this early into the offseason.

Jackie Butler is so fat that he got traded to the Houston Rockets in the Luis Scola deal!

The reason Jackie Butler got traded to the Houston Rockets is simple: Oberto!
