I just bought this yellow tee from Buffalo Exchange that has the word HONKY on the front. My initial reason for purchasing this shirt was the irony it emblazoned when wearing it. Reason being I'm not white. Now I think some people might find it offensive. So I'm doubting wearing it tongiht at The Parish in liberal Austin?
I might go down to the Parish tonight just to see it (no not really I've got an early morning tomorrow, but I would if I could)!
<---- This oppressed white man is very offended. Really, I couldn't care less. I don't get the ironic T-shirt thing, and I don't care about the word "Honky".
I don't think people are really offended by that term, are they? If somebody was in an argument and they called somebody that in seriousness, I think I'd burst out laughing.
that's like having a tee that has the N word on it and then saying "ha ha ha, its ironic cause i'm not black!" ...this coming from a black dude. Not that i think their on the same level of offensiveness but the shirt doesn't sound funny enough to overcome any racist connotations.
"HONKY" is taking it too far, in my opinion, since it is a racial slur. I wouldn't really be offended by it as much as I would just never wear it myself. Now something like "Pretty fly for a white guy" on a black guy's t-shirt...I think that's a little less abrasive.
personally the shirt would not bother me on the other hand I woudln't wear it -- it's like your asking for trouble from someone who really is racist looking for an excuse to be mad.
This honkey isn't offended, but I am enlightened... At the risk of spinning this right into D&D: For those that are of a specific ethnic group, would you be offended if someone wore a shirt that said chink, nip, wetback, slope, spic, wop, guiney, mick, limey, kike, etc... Are white people safe to make fun of? I think so. Others, not so much.
Personally, I find the double standard more offensive than the word itself. We're all entirely too damn sensitive these days, but a racial slur is still a racial slur, and its not okay just because its a slur against white people.
But not brave enough to drop the n-bomb....kinda like certain comics who want to be perceived as rebellious against today's overly PC society and will make all kinds of racial jokes ... except against jews and blacks. (Not that I think Mulder was actually trying to rattle off racial slurs, btw - just trying to point out an observation of mine)
As a white person, it doesn't bother me to be called a "honkey" but I feel that Lynus has a point. If we want to try to stop racism in this country, then we need to treat all races, even whites, with the same levels of respect.
assuming you are black, would you be offended by a white guy wearing a shirt that said "spook" or something like that?
Mulder, you forgot "extra terrestrials" (I won't use Aliens, because that's me ). And my answer is YES. Michael: Um, let me ask you, is there a term besides Mexican that you prefer? Something less offensive? Oscar: Mexican isn't offensive. Michael: Well, it has certain connotations. Oscar: Like what? Michael: Like...I don't...I don't know. Oscar: What connotations, Michael? Michael: Oh no, no, no, no... Oscar: You meant something... Michael: Now, remember that honesty... Oscar: I'm just curious. Michael: ...empathy, respect...(Jim's phone is ringing he walks out hurridly to answer it) Jim! Jim!
