Is the Rockets' lack of motivation related to being micromanaged?

Anyone knows how de-motivating it is to being micromanaged, someone watching you every minute, and worse, telling you what to do every minute. It's also why entrepreneurs have so much enthusiasm for their job.

Phil Jackson's triangle offense allows players to be their own entrepreneurs, diagnosing defenses and reacting on their own, while other great coaches do a lot more sitting and watching rather than managing by the minute.

The question is, where does JVG fit in this? Is he really 'managing' just about everything the Rockets do when they play, as they say? I gotta tell you, if that's the case, I don't see how they'll ever find the 'right players'.

so let me see ...25-24 with one guy shooting all the shots and its macro managing, but 19-30 its micromanaging. yet their fastbreak points are up. and last year when they were 45-20 over the last 65, was that micromanaging? plus this game was as much about george's 7 offensive rebounds over head and wesley as it was about missing shots. oh well

Change that to Yao and Stro making Geroge look like Dennis Rodman if you will.

Micro managing isnt the problem though.

BTW, I have a question. If Lebron made David Wesley look like a midget and a fool, why stick him on Kobe?

I mean, if Tmac isnt hitting shots, you know he can disrupt shots on the defensive end, use him as a stopper right?

This is really silly. So far, I'd say the lack of motivation is a sign of players who aren't motivated - Stro, DA. These guys had the EXACT same problems when they came to us. Frankly, Raef had the same reputation and it appears that JVG's micromanagement is working for him. So basically Carroll was 1 out of 3 and needs to trim the 2 that aren't working. Essentially all the dealmaking has been neutral and the only difference as to motivation - this team from last - is injuries (too many to name).

It sure looks that way. He did turn Tmac loose after that little "talk" they had last year. I imagine it went something like this :

TMac : "You're fired if you keep micromanaging me."
JVG : "OK. I don't want to be fired. My performance sucks so far. Les even had to defend me saying "I thought I hired a good coach". There's a FIRE GUNDY thread on some crazy fan site. Ok. I give. YOU have the green light, whenever, whereever. Can I micromanage the rest of them?"
TMac : "Whatever. Just give me the damn ball."

Of course, it took a bunch of embarrassing losses to force Tmac to go have that talk.

Leopards can't change their spots. The rest of the team DIDN'T have that talk. The rest of the team still gets the Bad Boss treatment. "I'm a m...f...ing m...f..er." That's our loveable leader.

Does the rest of the team include Rafer? He's fitting in quite nicely. Same for Luther even though he's hit the wall.

I just think this team really doesn't have an outspoken player that can help keep them fired up, get in their face, etc...

I don't blame JVG, I just think we really need a presence like Bob Sura in the locker room and on the court. Our guys are all so mellow...from T-Mac/Yao all the way down to Luther

A writer at the Houston Chronicle agrees with you.

I think this sums up the entire "problem" with the team:

Maybe I should have included this thread/Fox Sports link on JVG being observed as micromanaging: Slowing it down in Houston

Here's another point - you're way more inclined to tolerate being micromanaged if you're a lot younger (or less talented.) Once you're over 30 you're pretty much looking to make decisions on your own without someone yelling at you what to do every minute - I mean, that's already old enough to start coaching themselves. Replacing Anderson with Bogans makes sense if this is the underlying goal - JVG needs more yes-men. Why do you think he plays so many NBDL players?

When JVG repeatedly, almost daily, says his players aren't motivated, he's publicly mandating his hidden agenda to replace the veterans - it's not that they aren't motivated, but that they aren't motivated to follow his minute-to-minute coaching on the sidelines. Best solution is to find younger players if JVG is going to stay long-term, and you can bet that both are going to happen.

i thought van gundy only liked veterans. you all got to make up your mind. we should just say we dont like him because the team is losing and we think its all his fault. but why did we praise dawson for the moves last year instead of jvg when everyone here thinks its he who runs the team.
